New Fallknivens

Very nice knives and thanks for sharing. I have grown very fond of the Fallkniven Knives over the last year. I have been holding off on buying one, but made the plunge on Saturday. Bought a P/3G with the Blue handle for my wife.

Can anyone tell me a little about the blade steel being used on these knives. I am not firmiliar with 3G.

thx

I'm sure you will be pleased with the P/3G. It has been my EDC knife for the past several months and I really like it. Great choice:thumbup:

As far as the steel goes, I'm no expert so this info is just a regurgitation of what I've read/heard from other sources.

3G is also refered to as SGPS (Special Gold Powdered Steel). It is a hard steel, 62 HRC, and is considered to be among todays "super steels". (I have also seen it refered to as Super Gold Powdered Steel)

Because it is hard it will hold an edge well, but can be brittle and will chip or break rather than bend much. I don't think chipping should be a concern if used for cutting as intended. If you pry, or chop hard objects with this steel it may chip rather than bend or nick.

Fallkniven laminates their core of SGPS (or VG10) between two layers of softer steel (420J2 I believe). This gives the blade strength against breakage while allowing for excellent edge retention with the harder core. Both 420J2 and SGPS are stainless steels so the blade will have good to excellent corrosion resistance.

I'm not certain, and this is a bit of an assumption on my part, but I think Fallkniven's reference of 3G identifies One layer of Gold powdered core between Two laminated layers. In other words, it isn't that 3G is a specific type of steel, but rather it references the 3 layer laminated blade construction with a "G" core.

Harder steel can be more difficult to sharpen but I have found a combination diamond / ceramic stone or rods to work well with my Fallkniven knives (3G and VG10). A few quick passes and they are nice and sharp, but I try not to let them get very dull in the first place.

Here is the composition of the SGPS steel:

SGPS (edge)
C - 1.40
Si - 0.50
Mn - 0.40
P - 0.030
Cr - 15.00
Mo - 2.80
S - 0.030
V - 2.00

More information can be found on Fallkniven's site: http://www.fallkniven.com/next-index.htm

Hope this helps a bit.

Kevin

EDIT: SGPS is manufactured by Takefu Special Steel Co. Japan. Takefu also manufactures VG10.

Thanks Kevin for the great info. Just recieved the P/3G today. Got a chance to play around with it while my wife was busy. Surely a great little( I carry a Sebby)knife. I think my wife will love it. I may have to get one for myself as well down the road with the Yellow Scales. It is a dressy knife I must say. Very clean lines and feels great in the hand. Damn sharp as well out of the box.

thx again.

They are wicked sharp out of the box, no doubt about that. My sharpening skills/patience never allow me to get them as sharp as they come from factory, but I have no problem keeping them plenty sharp enough for every day use with very little effort.

I'm sure there are some, with more patience and technique, that can maintain the factory edge.

Hope she enjoys it.

Here are a few shots of the new for 2009 F1 Maroon Micarta and TK3 Ivory micarta. Neither are new models, just new scales available for '09.

I was supposed to have an F1 Ivory Micarta delivered along with the F1MM, but there was a minor mix up in the delivery so it will arrive in a week or ten days. Photos to follow.

I love the F1 with Micarta scales. That is beautiful. May have to get one to keep my thermorum (sp?) company.

Sorry to digress a little, does anybody know the type of lock used in TK4, lockback or liner lock? Thanks!

Oh Boy! That F1 is nice. Its going on the list to get.

The F1 Micarta have always been one of my favorite Fallkniven's. They just feel great in the hand, quality, weight, balance, everything just feels right to me. That's an opinion of course.

Fallkniven's website claims the Micarta series are handmade, which may be why they seem to stand out.

"It is especially exciting to handle a completely handmade knife, with the enduring knowledge that a skilled craftsman has put his soul into manufacturing this particular knife".

Kevin,

Any idea if they will offer it in 3G? My wife and I used the P/3G and have really taken a liking to that steel.:)

They are releasing a limited edition F1 with 3G steel in July '09. The information I have seen would suggest it will only be available with the Thermorun handle, not Micarta.

It will be a great knife, but won't have the additional refinement of the Micarta series.

From their website:

F1/3G
Many years ago, when we began the development of our now famous knife series Tre Kronor, we wanted to test something new: A completely unknown laminate powder steel. Our own tests went well, but we also wanted to test the steel on the open market in order, so to speak, to be on the safe side. So, we manufactured 110 F1-knives using this 3G steel, knives which were then sold all over the world. The reactions were, to say the least, positive. And so we could start manufacturing our most exclusive knife series.

Limited edition
What we hadn’t counted on however was that the market was never going to forget our bestselling F1 with this super steel - ever since this test series appeared we have received enquiries from all over the world whether it is possible to buy the F1/3G. Evidently, the combination of pleasant design and true super steel was something people could not get over! Therefore, to mark our 25th anniversary, we are now launching a limited series of 1,000 F1/3G knives. They are due to go on sale in summer 2009. The knife will only be manufactured with a shiny blade, and one characteristic is the special logotype with two crowns on either side of the oval which marks the unique edition.
