Hey,

I ordered my flash II with the black TiNi 50/50 edge. It should be here in a couple days. I am a first time buyer of sog and have heard great things about thier knives. I have a couple questions.

1) is the black blade teflon or just black TiNi?

2) about the legal issues of this knife. from what I here there are none.
from the united states code the definition of a switchblade (illegal) is
(1) by hand pressure applied to a button or other device in the handle of the knife (2) by operation of inertia, gravity, or both.
this excludes all the s.a.t. knives. will police know this? have there been any cases of problems by carrying this knife. The solution i see is just to conciel it and i wont get any problems.

looking fowards to my knife

Welcome Lee and congrats on purchasing your first SOG knife. I picked up a Zytel handled PE Flash II a few weeks ago and love it. Think you will to.

To answer your questions:

#1. The black Flash II's are TiNi not teflon. A lot of SOG knives when coated are either grey Epoxy coated or TiNi. I have an X-42 AutoClip with Black TiNi blade and the coating is holding up nicely.

#2. It's probably up to the officer and state as to if you will have a problem. So far, I have not had any problems here in Utah. Assisted knives seem to be very populare here (SOG and Kershaw) and I have not heared about legal problems.

Please tell us what you think of it after you get it and are able to use it a bit. :)

Hi Heber,
I just got a surprise Flash II from the brown Christmas truck this morning.
To tell you the truth, I'm not up on all the folder models (quite happy with my 14-year-old Tomcat so I don't follow the folder trends) and didn't realize what this one did till I opened it the first time. Fortunately, I had all of my most valuable personal parts well out of the way and my startled "yoip!" didn't disturb my wife too much. (Actually, she's pretty used to my startled yoips by now.) 50/50 satin blade.
My preference in my own regularly used knives is non-serrated, but for search & rescue use (ropes, cords, etc.) or an emergency removal from a traffic accident (seatbelt), I can see some use for the serrations. One-handed capability is always nice.
We did some tests at a junkyard for a project a while back, serrated definitely cuts through seatbelts quicker and easier, the trick is to keep the peaks sharp so it'll keep doing it.
Looks like an interesting little critter.

Hey Denis, that SAT get you by supprise eh? hee hee hee. Showed it to some friends the other weekend and it sure caught them by supprise too. lol

I like plain edged knives best too so thats how I got mine. It's intended purpuse for me is a backup rope/seatbelt cutter. Can't wait to get my hands on a Search/Rescue Flash II, should be even better. :)

Glad your knife hasn't bitten you. They come Razzor sharp so becarefull.;)

is there something going on here?
Sorry, we seem to have Hijacked your thread. (happens alot on this forum). Denis and I were just discusing the Flash II's. :)

Lee,
Sorry if we wandered.
I think you'll enjoy your new knife when it gets to you. This one has the Zytel handles, seems pretty solid in assembly, minimal blade play, I imagine yours will be about the same.

Heber,
The S&R should work well in that role. Just found out the knife I got didn't match the box. Checked the website after your post. The box here says Search & Rescue, but the knife is a standard Flash II. Got confirmation a few minutes later from SOG. One of those rare snafus where the wrong knife got into the right box. In a more or less dedicated S&R knife, the serrations on the blade are a good idea, and the arched spine is also great for cutting clothes off a victim if necessary.

Denis

thank guys.

I will give you a report when it gets in on wed. i ordered it on friday from botac (20 bux below msrp) with 3 day ups shipping to realize they dont ship on weekends. Man its been a long 3 days.

no problem hijacking the thread. this is also the less hostile and most friendly forum i have found.

thanks

Lee

It just came in today. I probably already have a few hundred opens and closes already. its already second nature even with the left hand. i got the zytel handle and think its a great size and weight. Its perfect to ride around in my pocket (which it will)(except for school). The blade come very sharp.

the lock and opening mechanism feel very strong and have a nice click. One thing that I found nice is that the blade is not propelled with very much force. this way it wont cut it you get in the way and if someone tries to open it like a traditional folder they wont slice thier hand open.

Its my first sog knife and i am very impressed with the knive and all the little details they put into the knife. Like how the ridges on the lock hare slanted for better grip when unlocking it.

Im sure this knife will give me years of loyal service and thanks guys for the help.

Aren't they a blast ! :D , The more you use it, the more you will like it.

A little bit of advice, passed down through generations of Flash-ers , When the knife is in your pocket, attached with the clip, you will notice if you reach to pull the knife, it wants to stay put, which is what it was designed to do I guess, use your thumb and index finger to "feel" the knurled end of the knife, you will notice just by feeling a swell end with knurls on end of handle, pull up on this area with your index and thumb, this will make the knife come out of your pocket much smoother and faster, with no hang on clip.
I found this to be a very fast way to retreive the knife, otherwise it seems to hang on your pocket, hope this helps and glad you like it.
You are now a member of the Flash-ers of America... :D

Heber,
The brown Christmas truck hit again today.
I think you'll like the Search & Rescue model. Great for EMS use on seatbelts & clothes & so on.
I coulda used this back when I was a working man.

Dpris, What gives ? , How about tellling that driver he made a mistake, and give him my address, :D I need one of them too, do you feel sorry that I did not get one ? If you do feel sorry for me, mail it to me, I'll be waiting...............And waiting.......... :D

Robbie Roberson ;)

P.S. By my count, you have way too many, share with your fellow knife buddies..... :p

Hi Robbie,
You know very good & well you've got ten times as many knives as I do! :footinmou
Besides which, that Christmas truck driver knows it's a one-way stop at this house. Lotsa stuff in, nothing out. :p
Do I feel guilty about you not having one yet? Yes, and I'm sure it'll keep me awake all night.
Hang in there, good things come to the patient. (Or, as one buzzard said to the other: "Patience, hell! I'm gonna kill something!") ;)
I'm still waiting to see your next design.
Denis

Dpris, O.K., I will send you a good knife, if you will send me a good knife, like that new SOG.
I have a mint condition knife that I think may be worth a lot of money, it is stamped "Paki" something, the last part is rubbed off, , but I can tell it's a good knife, because it has multi-colored wood handles, and nice brushed stainless blade.
My wife used it a little in her flower beds, but never hurt it a bit, comes with a genuine leather sheath, laced together with genuine steering wheel cover lacing, :D , and even has those neat little tassles hanging off the bottom of the sheath.
Now is that a fair trade or what ? :p

Congrats to both of you on getting your new knives. Those Flashes sure can be addicting. lol

Lee, it's been a couple of days now. What have you cut with it? I got mine on a Saturday afternoon, the next day, it was used for cutting up Steaks for a BBQ. (Pics in the Tactical Tableware thread).

Denis, where did you order your Flash II S/R? If you don't mind my asking.;) What handle option did you get? Plain Zytel or the Camo version? BTW I'd be carefull with any "Paki" knives. Robbie should know better. :p lol

Hi Heber,
Both of these came direct from Chris at SOG, they're writer's samples, I didn't order them.
They both have the partially serrated "white" blades with the checkered Zytel
handles.
Haven't cut anything with them yet, I usually wait till I can get photos done before I risk scratching items up.
But, they're right here on the computer desk in the office, I pick them up & work the actions every now & then while I'm sitting here.
Not sure the S&R would do well on steaks anyway, but knowing your enthusiasm, you'll probably try it. A better test might be to wrap a couple old seatbelts around your steak & cut the belts off, then use the standard Flash to actually cut the meat. Maybe?
I'm sure Robbie knows better on the Pakistani stuff. I've got a buddy who does the mountain man rendezvous circuit here in northern Utah, he keeps coming up with these "good deals" on Pakistani blades & every time I keep telling him he wasted his money if he wants serious steel, but he keeps on doing it. Came home from some trip a year or so ago with a sword he'd traded into and felt real good about, said he was into it for $50. I told him that very weekend I'd seen the same sword on one of the "Anything For $15" table at the gunshow in Salt Lake. He's a good man otherwise, just knows even less about knives than I do, and that's scary. Robbie, on the other hand, obviously knows his way around good steel.
Got down by Delta, incidentally, last week, brought home the old family branding iron my grandfather used to use. My uncle inherited it, stopped using it in favor of an electric iron a while back, and my cousin graciously let me have it.
Happy Monday & may Timpanogos smile upon you.

havnt really had the chance to cut much yet. I cant bring it to school with me but it always waits for me in my center console. the mechanism has improved over the few days ive had it. Its been more than a few times ive been yelled at because i walk aroung around the house always clicking it open and closed.

i think i might also need a little something smaller. When i take this knife out to cut small things (like those damn ketchsup packets at restraunts) it looks a bit threatening. whats a good small knife at a reasonable price. anyone have the blink or twitch?

My bro is looking at getting a coldsteel recon 1. Anything to be said on this knife?

If you look at a Twitch II, you will see it is the perfect size for pocket carry, not too big, not too small. Comes with a lock and can be opened two ways, thumb studs or flipper bar, cool little knife, and priced very reasonable for the workmanship and the cool looks that goes into this knife. I had one and traded it, wish I had another, very fun and has a nice clip.
There is only one downside to the Twitch II, you will probably open it 10 times more often than the Flash, it's that much fun.... :D
