Ok so I have been pretty absent here....sorry about that. Been busy with my jobs and family.

Well I needed something worthy of the WSS forum here to talk about so how about flashlights...? The common affordable type, not the extreme boutique styles that cost 200+ for a 2 inch long 400 lumen titanium job

Surefire and Streamlight are very common in my house since I use both everyday for work and home.

But what else? Fenix, Maglight, pentagon, pelican, what?

I found these little fellas at countycomm and picked two up...they sound freaking cool and fit the needs i have found.

What I am looking for is a SMALL powerful back up light for duty. I have a Stinger on my belt and a TL1 on my G22....but I dont use the TL1 as a flashlight its a weaponlight only. And the stinger only has a 1 hour time useage. So this little guy will take the place of the non existant back up.

this is by no means a deal spot...but more of a discussion about neat little lights.

I have two of the Pentagon MOLLE lights and they are just awesome for EDC on a duty belt. They work great but just not for edc off duty. They are great for my Tac Vest and all and wonderful for home use since they have the ability to have colored lenses screwed in like the older crook neck flashlights the US issued years ago...(which I still have 4 of)

I have one of the Pentagon Molle lights and love it. Unfortunately my understanding is that they lost a law suit to Surefire and have closed down. I use mine with the blue lense the check on the kids at night if they're crying out or fussing in their sleep.

Streamlight has out a new handheld light that you might be interested in, the Poly Tac. C4 Led with 120 lumens for 2 hours on two cr-123 batteries. It's the size of a G2 from surefire and looks to run right at the same price.

The new Micro stream from streamlight is nice but needs a longer run time with only 1.5hours of 20 lumens output. It's nice and small though.

Just some observations.

I love flashlights, almost as much as knives. Well at least it's second on my love of gear list.

Surefire E1B  It's called the Backup. Dual mode, 80 or 5 lumans, double duty clip, 1 CR123 lithium cell.

Something from the Nitecore line will be my next flashlight purchase.

Here's my recommendation:

Pocketable, lightweight, long runtimes...Oh wait, wrong light. :D

That Maratac looks a nice little light, especially for the price. It's amazing what can be achieved with a AAA now. I would certainly try one if I could get them in the UK at that price.

For neat little lights though, I think it's hard to beat the ZebraLight H30-Q5. It's not a thrower but lights a room up just fine. 0.83" diameter body, 1" head, 2.2" long. Brighter and runs 3x longer than the AAA light on full. Right angle head is great for clipping to gear. I put it through a webbing loop on the front of my shoulder straps for night walking. It can also run from a rechargeable RCR123.

The AA version is slightly longer and thinner with much greater cell flexibility. Also available in a nice warm white version for better colour rendition.

I like ZebraLights!

My latest 'must have' though is a Malkoff MD4 body with an MD2 head, two-stage adapter, M60W MCE module and a couple of 18650 cells. Should make a great night walking light for when brightness is needed! >=400 lumens out the front of warm white light. I'm saving up for it now.

I have a Nightcore PD and honestly it is all the light I need. Runs on one AA, just enough light for tactical use and can adjust down to trail walking intensity if I choose. Goes with me everywhere. Went INTO the lake with me after a capsize last weekend. Swam about 300 meters in the dark and the light saved my bacon.

In the cr123 format, if utmost reliability is your concern then take a look at a ratwisty or raclicky at ralights.com
They've knocked novatacs out of my rotation for rugged use.

However, they are not the smallest nor lightest.

For lower cost, weight & size but equally high (if not higher) versatility take a look at the lights offered by Liteflux.

Someone just did a review on here on the 4sevens Quark. They have a model that runs on one AA or one CR123A. Of course performance is greater with the CR123A, but I like lights that run on the AA's (I have several of the Pentagonlight Molle lights like you mentioned and love them).

Knife works has them. I only provide this link because you can compare so many models along with the Fenix lights. I have a Fenix and like it very much, but a Quark may be my next light. http://www.knifeworks.com/fenixflashlights-3.aspx Of course, you can just go to the 4seven's site too.

Nitecore D10 with lithiums. With the capability to dim and ramp up 100 different settings it has runtime and output should you choose it all on 1 AA. I have been EDC'n it for 3 months, great light.

For "wilderness" lights, I'd probably recommend a trio of lights:
1. A variable intensity larger light that can be either a spotight, or a long-running light source that can be carried in a belt holster (Fenix LD10, Nitecore D10, Quark AA)... preferably using a Neutral or Warm White Cree LED.
2. A backup light (long runtime, long moon mode for using out of regulation). For that, nothing beats a $15 Fenix E01.
3. A headlamp.

The Nitecore D10 looks like an awesome light, but it doesn't come with a pocket clip. Can anyone tell me if it would be possible to mount one?
