I finished up this ladder pattern folder yesterday, and when I made the steel I forgot about making enough for the back spacer. By the time I made the blade and the bolsters there wasn't enough left for the back spacer so I used a piece of twist I had left from another knife. OPINIONS: did I mess it up by using the twist damascus for the back spacer, what do you think? Do you think it would have been better with a piece of plain N/S?

OAL 6 5/8" - 2 7/8" blade - 1080 & 15n20, stabilized splated maple, ti liners

Thanks

Bill

I think it looks great! I am wondering if I should do guard and buttcap in damascus or plain 5160 (like the blade). The damascus just got a vote.

I think it looks great. Maybe something on the spine to transition from the straight lines of the blade to the twist of the backspacer. File work or maybe an inlay but it looks great the way it is. Nics work!!

It sure seems alright to me! i absolutely LOVE the way those two wavy dark layers run along the spine of the blade, and I think it would be incredible to watch them continue all the way down the back of the handle, but c'est la vie. I wouldn't change a thing on that knife.

I like it. It gives a nice contrast. Ladder pattern would have just been a bunch of wavy lines like on the top of the blade. I would re-shoot the first picture with the blade pointing down. It makes the knife look more porportioned. Sometimes taking the shot with the blade point up makes the handle look a lot longer then the blade.

Thank you for your opinions and suggestions, I believe its going to stay as is, the N/S would probably take something away from it and if I use another piece of damascus that I have, it won't match the blade and bolster tops either so might as well leave it to where it has a lot of contrast rather then just a little contrast. And this way it looks like it was intented to look this way and not a screw up from a poor match.

Chuck, I had several pictures of this folder going all directions but the pictures going point down picked up a bad yellow reflection from the back ground. I was tring to really highlite the knife by putting it on the yellow but that was a poor idea and I had things to get finished up this morning so I just settled for what I had. Here's a better picture, point down and less back ground contrast.

Thanks again,

Bill

I love it the way it is -- great contrast. That thing also has some beautiful curves. :)

The stars from the twist accent any damascus blade. I use it all the time. Try using twisted nickle damascus blued and heat blued blade. Its all on contrast. Neat, very clean knife.

Bill only you would question something so beautiful! :D I understand though, if it's not what you intended; I'd wonder too. Well, rest assured: As you have read the jury is in, and it's just fine.

if you really need to know what to de send the knife to me. I am sure I can help where no others have here after I see it in person....he he! :D

Thanks for the nice comments everyone, totally appreciated.

BG, darn, I had it all boxed up and ready to send you and then it hit me, I didn't have your address, sorry. :D

Bill - my opinion is probably a day late and a dollar short, but...

I looked at the pics before I read your post and the backspacer did jump out at me. For better or worse, take it for what it is.

I like it the way it is, but I do think that a more "straight-line" pattern (edge view) would have worked too.

I like your cutout for the thumbstud, but the stud is too far down for me when closed.

There ya go, my -0.98 (0.02 minus $1)

Beutiful Bill! Man I got to get buisy, that is a very cool folder. I understand what your talking about with the back spacer, but it looks great with the twist as is.

I've never been a real fan of full length spacers (instead of a stop pin) because I think the difference in thickness between the spacer and the blade is a bit jarring visually. But by making the spacer a contrasting pattern, you've minimized this. I'd have thought that's what you were trying to do, If you hadn't 'fessed up!

In short, keep it the way it is. It looks great!
