I recently picked up an antique cleaver completely covered in rust. Finally got most the rust off with a 2 day vinegar soak. I have found a makers mark and wondered if anyone had any info. I know it's a beatty cleaver and I know they were an 1800s company. The mark on my cleaver I have only scene on mine and once in an Internet article. I'm just looking for info. And also is there some way to smooth the pitting? Any other care tips? What's up with the edge being black? Any help appreciated.

Decide what you want to do with it before your deal with the pits.
That looks like you could split a sheeps carcass with a two handed hold.
