Today was a great day. My new lighter Foxy's Folly arrived! It is a great effort. First thing I did was to take it out to the porch and slap it, (flat sided) on the porch rails. Strong slaps, no problem. The butt plate did rotate on the handle a little. I twisted it back into allignment and tightened the plate up with some peening of the tang end. This broke off some little sections of the wood. I will fix this up when I put the V groove in at the plate/handle juncture.
The dimensions are as follows:
28 oz.
OAL is 21 9/16ths
Blade is 16 15/16ths
Handle and Bolster is 5"
Narrowist point of blade is 1.540
Widest point of blade is 3.260
Thickest point of blade at bolster is .300
It then thins to .250 out to above the sweet spot
Past the sweet spot it is .200
Towards the tip it is about .150
Very nice job of distal taper!
I am very happy with this khuk although I think it is longer than intended by several inches, which is good by me also. I like long blades.
I feel that with this blade coming in at over 21 1/2 inches, 28 oz is a darn good weight. If it was the length we thought it would be I am sure this blade would be spot on weight wise also. Get the length right and the weight will follow. For me, I am perfectly happy having this FF be about the same length as my first FF, only about 1/2 the weight. My first FF is 52 oz!!! I will take some side by side shots this weekend if the weather permits. Very pretty wood on the handle also.
All in all I AM HAPPY!! :D

Nice pic!

My 28 oz. (the other one that came with yours) should be arriving today as well. Can't wait to get home and see it. I'll try and post pics tonight. I would be disappointed it the buttcap was loose, especially on a new wood-handled khuk, but I suppose that could be easily fixed.

Regards,

Norm

I don't think that the cap was really loose. The side impact test sort of shifted it sideways. There was no sign of loosness when checking out it at first. I wanted to truly test the blades strength. This blade rings when I do my fingernail tap test. It rings over more of the blade and at a higher pitch than any other khuk I have. It actually sings when I do this sounding testWay Cool! :D I have actualy removed the chipped wood edges and smoothed the buttcap/handle juncture since I took this pic. I will try some woodchuckery on this sweet wood. Here is the handle before I fixed my little misshap.

What is the V- groove for, is that part of the repair? Would like to know the right way to fix this type of damage in case it happens to one of my kuks.

Thanks!

The V groove is a thing Yvsa described to get rid of the sharpness of the buttcap/handle juncture. Basically, you use a triangular file, to file a groove right at the wood/buttcap juncture. This gets rid of the sharp edges found on some buttcaps and can be used as an attractive transition line, between the buttcap and handle. If you take your time, it can look as if it was there when it was made by the Kamis. :)

WTF?!?!?!?

It is 21-9/16" OAL?!?!?
They were supposed to be 16-1/2" - 17" OAL and 24 ounces max.
I realize these two came in heavier at 28 ounces but they must be made of either airweight steel or are hollow inside!!!!

Mine is a tad over 17" OAL and is only .075" thicker than yours at the bolster @ .375. It's .285 @ the sweet spot and .240 about an inch from the point and also has a nice distal taper.
Also it is only 2-7/8" at the widest point. All other dimensions are similar And it WEIGHS 31 Ounces!!!!

Yours has 4-5/16" more length, is 3/8" wider at the sweet spot and weighs ONLY 28 ounces!!!!
Hell, I'd not only be happy I would be Ph******g Ecstatic!!!! :p ;)

Really, Had the originals had came in at that weight there would've been no need for a shorter lighter model.:grumpy:
At least that lets us know there won't be any problem getting the weight right on the 17" Special Run of Foxy Follys anyway.:D

IIRC 28 ounces or thereabouts is what the original antique khukuri that Foxjaw made the cast model off of weighed.

Damn kamis.:grumpy:

Exactly what I was thinking, Yvsa.

This is a very interesting twist....

28 oz is 1.30 oz per inch, which is like the kukri I finished up for JP.

If that is the case, you got a heckuva khukuri there, Aardvark.

Please verify dimensions a.s.a.p.

This is an example of fine craftsmanship and many years of experience by a real master that hasn't lost his touch in spite of a severe setback physically.
Bura is Still The Master!!!! :D
Uncle Bill would be proud, also frustrated that the damn kamis can never get it right the first time.;)

Mine is marked with the initials, SB and has a kami mark of a half sun with rays emitting from the top, I think it is Shers mark and initials.
Mine also shows that Sher is still living up to his reputation of making the heaviest and strongest khukuris coming out of BirGhorka. Normally a good thing.:D  ;)

Here is a shot of both FF's Horn=first. Wood=new.
It is dark and inside, but you get the idea.

A better shot of the spines. You can better see the differance. The new FF has great fullers. This baby sings.

If you look at the depth of the fullers, you can see that the new one has larger, deeper fullers. It also feels harder and tougher, steel hardness wise than my first. Also absolutely NO sign of Habaki at all!

Thanks, but you've got the wrong AA this time.

A lot of guys have asked about the difference between the antique khukuris and the new ones HI makes in the past.
This is an excellent example even though both are brand new and made by HI.
The lighter thinner one is the way that the old khukuris were made and dimension wise more in tune with the old ones.
I would absolutely love to be able to play with one of these for a while.:D  :D

If the first run had came in like these I believe Foxjaw would have been a very happy camper.
I sure as hell know I would've been.:D
But in reality as much as I love my full size Foxy Folly I firmly believe the 17" model is going to be more practical, that is if Yangdu can get the kamis straightened out while she is in Nepal and get these made to specs. :grumpy:

LOL.....

actually, it's kinda :( :(

I have a crushing headache right now....

If either of you is disappointed, I will gladly set the matter straight. email me off list if necessary.

This is indeed hilarious.....they got the right weight/length ratio, but made the full size. I'm going to guess that somewhere along the line, Yangdu (and perhaps me) got mixed up about it.

Oh well.....don't blame the kamis on this one.

They did a heckuva job!
