I just lost my Opine No. 7. I am rather sad... I do love my Opines, but I think something new might be good. I am in Bible College and I am just shy of broke, so I don't have much money to invest.

What friction folder under $20 would y'all recommend? I am really looking at a Higanokami right now, but I am not sure of size.

Just remember that I am in Bible college, so I don't need a big knife. Just something for food, working around church, and a little whittling here and there.

I always hear good things about the Svord Peasant. They're cheap enough to not worry too much about, and they come in a couple sizes and different handle options.

Another  for the Peasant!

I owned a Svord Peasant a while ago. Someone gifted me the metal handled standard sized model and I really disliked it. Is the wooded handled mini better?

I've been tempted by the Svord more than once.
Still, since I was born and raised with a different type of friction folders, the extended tang just bothers me...so my vote goes for another Opinel (you can change size, wood, steel) or a Taramundi.

What didn't you like about it? Still have it? Maybe you can over come your dislike of it and save yourself 20 bucks. Would a Victorinox Camper or the like suit you?

I didn't like the size or the thin handle. I am looking primarily at the Higanokami, the No. 6 Opinel (sticking to what I know), the Taramundi (if I could only find one online!!!) or the copper handled micro Peasant.

I just got the micro peasant, I love the size but it is the metal handle. The metal handled Svords got very poor reviews. I like the mini-peasant with the plastic handle quite a bit. Seems the wood would :) be good too. You have to have a good way to carry though since the tang can be a bit of a pain. I always did at work carry with an in-pocket pouch. Very good work knife.

Higonokamis have a reputation of opening in pocket so you need a pouch there too.

Ohta makes an awesome one for @$50.
Comes with a pouch, worth saving for

I endorse the recommendation for Ohta San's friction folders.

Have you looked at the MAM's. They are pretty inexpensive, have nice thin blades, and can also be had with a liner lock. I can find you a link later if you are interested.

That one is still for sale too ;) although quite a bit out of budget since it's a very special example.

I noticed that. It would be a great one to get a hold off even if it were a bit more than planned.

I have seen the MAMs, and I would just stick to an Opinel at that point.

Have you seen this one?

There actually pretty decent performers for there price tag, I was pleasantly surprised by them, but then again, nothing wrong with the Opinel, and since you already have one, I just re-read your original post and realized you lost your Opinel, I thought I had read that you loved your Opinel :o

I have tried a couple of MAMs, and they are interesting, but if you can only have one, I'd say stick with Opinel.

Same thing with the Svord peasant. I have the mini with a wood handle; good steel, and really different. In Minnesota, that is not necessarily a compliment. Mine is fun for occasional carry, but if you have to stick with one, again I'd say go with the Opinel.

I may well try some of the other inexpensive friction folders in the future, but I haven't seen anything I'd trade my last Opinel for.
