I'm opening a new gallery. We've taken a cool old building on outr main street and completely remodled it. The front is very industrial modern steel and glass. I've been a jeweler for 22 years and will be selling custom jewelry and lots of eclectic visionary metal work. I'm looking for some blades. I know nothing about knives, only what is visualy pleasing. I'm looking for a few bladesmiths in the practical affordable, mid and lower upper end. In contemporary looks. Any suggestions? Thank you

If you check out this website, and give us some idea as to what you are thinking, we could make some recommendations. The variables are too complex to list without some groundwork laid:

You can take a look at the BladeForums Maker's Gallery, and Maker's knives for sale.

There are also several dealers of custom cutlery whose websites
you might want to look at.

One's been mentioned; a couple more are www.knifeart.com and www.truenorthknives.com

Enjoy the blades.

I think you're on the right track, tying in custom knives with jewelry and sculpture. I know it's been done before and I actually consigned some of my collection to a high end jeweler but was not very successful. The staff needs to be educated and alot of people just don't want to take the time.

I think you should start by attending a knife show or two. There is one in Solvang the end of April, excellent makers and it is run by Dave Harvey, owner of www.nordicknives.com. He also has a terrific shop to check out for ideas.

Good luck,
Win

Nancy,
I'm sure there will be some wonderful suggestions upcoming.

One of my recommendations would be to educate the public, as Win brought out. You might at some point host a few bladesmiths to conduct a demonstration of forging or to show their work. Have on hand printed information for the patrons to take and be sure to advertise to the appropriate markets. I did not notice what city you are in?

Herb Derr makes very nice, good looking mid to low end price range customs knives which always comes with a high quality leather and exotic skin sheath.
Would be a well suited package for upper end Gallery sales.

I've been looking for a dealer for my knives. I'm mid-low end/practical :D

..I tend to stick to full tang/leather sheaths/simple & practical blade shapes.

Joe from knifemakersdatabase.com here. Thanks for mentioning the site Karl (and for the awesome knife!). We're currently looking to start working with some of the knifemakers out there who would like to further promote there work by selling their knives through our site. If your interested and would like to learn more, by all means, contact me. We will be putting some great stuff up by JS Smith Rusty Polk over the next few days including a couple of skinners, a bowie (Rusty's competition special) and an incredible damascus dagger with a fluted handle and gold inlay - all great hand forged stuff - which I mention because as a site, we plan to lean toward dealing in hand forged knives, although we will deal with all kinds of knives by all kinds of knifemakers, just as long as its quality! And I must say, no problems in that area so far! Blue Dragon, if you're looking for a dealer, send me an email and let me know what I may be able to do for you, Have a good night everyone... back to work in the morning.

I looked at her profile and she doesn't even accept email from members.
But, I tried!

That was my first instinct too (click on the profile) . We've gone over this more than once, eh ? ;) She is new here, so I guess we can give her a day or so :D

I think weve been forgotten. This may be a sign of how our relationship will be with her.

50%!!! Are you serious Raymond? I simply can't believe that... I usually don't throw rates out until I talk to the knifemaker I'm working with, but just for the record, the HIGHEST consignment rate I EVER charge is 14 - 15%, and that’s on knives $500.00 or less! Wow... is all I can say - 50% would be acceptable... if the other party made half the knife!!! If anyone out there is looking to consign knives over for a REASONABLE rate, then please do contact me. If you look at my site, knifemakersdatabase, you'll see that we're just getting started on consignment projects, but we do plan on catering to as many knifemakers and blade smiths as my time will allow. Don't hesitate to contact me. Hand forged knives are a plus, as the site will be concentrating on the hand forged blade and ABS blade smiths in the future. Well, just want to get the word out. I'd also like to apologize for my participation level her, but constructing KMD and filing in information for over 600 knifemakers, linking to their various types of knives and their "knives available" section for each one has been a mission for lack of a better word! Well, I'm ready to get back to work. Stay tuned and Thanks for listening!
