I was trolling through the "what's happening" link over at great eastern's site http://greateasterncutlery.net/blog/information/whats-happening-december-4th/ and about halfway down the page came upon this picture, with the caption "#53 pen blades ready to be roll straightened".

Has anybody heard any information about this yet?

I noticed those pen blades too, but have not heard anything and new 53s aren't currently on the production list. Be interesting to see what GEC is cooking up. I'm somewhat hoping it'll be a single spring knife with a clip (my preference) on one end and pen blade on the other.

I'm with you. I've carried a #53 (one or the other of two I own) since 2008, I really like the pattern. It will be interesting to see what they have in the works.

I need to get my hands on the #53 and try one out. I love the equal end shape.

I would really like to see GEC come out with a straight equal end jack like the #53 but in the #66 length or even shorter (basically a cross between the #68, #66, and #53 jacks with a liner down the middle, and both blades on the same end). This would be my dream GEC.

Well it was confirmed this morning on a GEC Distributors Blog that there will be a new variation of the #53 Pattern coming out in a few weeks...................now the question is what blade will pair up with the pen..............clip, spear, wharncliffe or muskrat and on which end.........

Crossing my fingers it'll be like a grown up 68 pattern with a single spring & regular clip or muskrat clip main.

Adding a pen is horrible news to me. Only version I would be interested in other than a backup of the one I have would need to retain the coping. Its the most usefull blade by far. Combine it with the muskrat clip and make it a jack knife and I would certainly pick one up. Not having to krink the blades and no third blade would allow the clip to be longer.

I know what you mean, Jeff. A centered tip on two blades... I´d like to see more sheepfoot or coping blades as secondary for being a blade-tip bladeshape. More usage for the two different bladeshapes. But that´s just my opinion...

Andi, so many voice their oppinion on having a coping/sheepsfoot as a second blade instead of a pen and no one listens. Seems silly to me not to listen to the folks that spend their money on your products. Oh well.

Thinking about the 53 more I have some points to add. I misspoke earlier. The clip is already un-krinked and as long as it can be. I would say a sort of half stockman without the clip and only one spring would be interesting but I enjoy the extra grip from the second spring. Even though I hardly use the clip it is nice to have a long blade just incase. I dont think I really need it to be a blade with any belly. I would love to see a new version that has a long low riding sheepsfoot or wharnie main blade to go along with the coping and spey. Of course it would need to be in ebony :D

I wonder if this outing will resemble the harness jacks from several years ago, except with a pen blade in place of the punch.
If so I would be in for a couple, especially if they did a spear main blade.

Robot, I recently bought a Marbles import with that blade configuration on an equal end large frame.
Fine knife. It would be better, IMO, if the secondary was a sheepfoot or coping blade.

I would love to compare it to a GEC offering!

I completely agree with the coping blade assertion. A very underrated blade to be sure. Still I like the feel of the #53 frame with minimal blades sticking out. For example, the sheepsfoot blades on the Cuban stockman models are awesome.
I wonder what it would take to get a #53 with a spear main and a coping secondary. . .

Word is it's going to be single spring with a big clip & pen at opposing ends.

I'm still in the camp that at least one of the blades must have a belly, so I guess I'm good with this one. I still haven't picked up (and won't) one of the #53 cubans.

But a Clip primary w/ either a coping/wharnie/sheepsfoot secondary would have me preodering right now.
Of course a follow on issue of these with the large sheepfoot/wharni from the cuban or BF knife paired with a pen blade would get a lot of attention from me.

I too would like to see a jack with a coping or sheepsfoot secondary. Perhaps we'll see that on down the road, as GEC has a history of offering new & different blade combos & mixing things up on existing well established frames.

I'm near certain this is the 1st time they've done a 53/54 with a single backspring, so that alone appeals to me.

That sounds awesome. Slap some Krytonite/Lava Lamp/Neon Blue Acrylic scales on it and I am there.

Unless something changes (not uncommon @ GEC) only bone and wood are on the schedule for both N'field & Tidioute versions. Types of each haven't been decided yet.

I'm impressed with these, but will readily admit my poor photos don't do them justice. These have what I'd call medium pulls and as typical for GEC 53/54 frames nice open and closing snap.
