New Gen2 BK2

You have the ESEE 5 sheath, correct?

Moose has both the ESEE 5 sheath and the Spec Ops Survival shown above.
I think he was talking about getting an Altoids tin in the Survival sheath.

Gotcha. A little off topic, but do you have the ESEE 5 sheath as well? If so, which one is better, and why?

I had the ESEE 5 sheath. Didn't float my boat so I returned it. I just prefer the split molle straps on the Spec Ops sheaths, and I don't put a ton of stuff on my sheaths. Just some basics. Moose likes his very much, however, and I'm sure he will chime in eventually and contrast them for you. The ESEE 5 sheath definitely holds more stuff.

Yeah, I'll try to get a pictorial review up, but for now, I like both, but they both serve a different purpose.

As with a knife sheaths, the idea is to keep the knife with you and protect you from the blade. Both the ESEE5 sheath and Spec Ops Survival Sheath do that. Somewhere along the way, we started wanting sheaths to do more than that. We wanted them to carry our "survival kits".

In my ESEE5 sheath, I can carry everything I would need for a tough spot in the woods, including shelter, water, food, and fire. Easily. I have enough room for my ASK, 20' of paracord, and an emergency blanket, as well as a firesteel. That entire rig ways alot, and by alot, I mean close to 2 1/2lbs fully loaded, knife and all. That's alot for a hip knife.

The Spec Ops, is much lighter, it can still hold some equipment, but not as much as the ESEE5. The trade off, its much, much lighter. Right now, I have about 30' of para in the pouch, and some water treatment tabs.

Here's the thing, based on your skill levels with woodland skill, the Spec Ops pouch will carry the same thing as the ESEE5 sheath. Shelter, fire, water, and food. Those items can be found in the knife compartment in the sheath. The knife. The rest is just for making things easier.

Both sheaths are high quality, well made, tough as nails, and easy to wear and be worn. The biggest difference, the Spec Ops was Made in USA, the ESEE5, Hecho en Mexico. No big, like I said, both are very well made and tough as woodpecker lips.

I like having a E kit with my knife, but for the last 3yrs, I have been constantly improving my woodland skills, and can get by just fine without the kit, but in a tough spot, you may not be mechanically able to do much with the skills in your head, if you are physically broken. Build a debis shelter, or cover up with an E blanket. Carve out a water bearer, or use a plastic HD ziploc bag. Make a bowdrill kit or flick a bic. See what I mean. Physically sound, and healthy, I can do fine, taking a 80' fall off a hill and breaking my leg, I want my E kit, and my knife. Both sheaths can provide these things, the ESEE5 just holds more. The compartment on the ESEE5 sheath is 5"x3"x1 1/4". It holds alot.

I'll get some pics up soon, and sorry for the hijack Guyon, glad you finally got a Gen 2 BK2.

Moose

Thanks for the heads up moose. Yeah, sorry Guyon for the thread hijacking.

What thread hijacking? Threads are conversations.
I posted up the pic of an unusual sheath, and a sheath conversation ensued. Makes sense to me.
I don't expect everyone to post the same "Great knife!" post.

ESEE 5 sheath was $62 shipped if I'm not mistaken.
Survival Sheath is a moot point because you can't buy them. It's a discontinued model.
However, the comparable Spec Ops Combat Master (with pocket and velcro closure) runs in the $45-$50 range.
