man bryan your killing it lately. keep it up sir.

gunknifenut great looking designs and handles. I'm interested to see you get them out and about and beat on em.

That's cool Gene, what were your thoughts when coming up with that design ?

This knife is a bit of a mixed bag really. I thought about several of my favorite "BIG" knives. And tried to combine the good stuff, and dump the bad.
While the handle is a bit different, I took a little from the WSK and threw it in there...I have always liked the WSK/ Tracker handle.
One design feature that I think of as "MINE" is the fact that I place your hand over the edge when you grip the handle...this give good power on a down stroke for making fuzz sticks or slicing. That whale back hump is what I am talking about, holding the knife, your hand is over the blade, not a choil or riccasso.
This is something I did with my bushcraft knife entry and this one..and more in the future.

As far as chopping goes..I stick with what I know works..I like a flared handle at the butt. This allows a lazy grip (hand all the way AROUND the butt) and buys me some real estate as far as blade length. This thing chops pretty well. I took out as a blank and whooped on it...it does well.
While the handle puts your hand Over the edge when you grip it tightly, by slacking off at the butt of the handle, you get "IN LINE" with some great snap cuts. I didn't come up with this any other way than just swinging a hammer over the years...when I am tired and worn out, I still have to use the hammer some times..when this happens, I naturally go to the fawns foot of the hammer handle...so I added one to my knife handle.

The blade is a parang in my mind. I just threw in a clip so it was sharp and pointy. I like a sweeping edge, like I said, and I wanted to try to get that into a chopper camp knife design.
Some inspiration came from different designs I was working on, both bigger and smaller knives, it kind of led me to this design.
I don't know why this one was made before older designs I have...but I am glad I did it.
...I will give this one some dirt time for sure this weekend.
I will try to use it and abuse it, even field sharpen it maybe.

Thanks again on the kind words guys.

Hi all,

Here is a video of Gene's knives in action. I made the blade blanks for him.

Just click on the pic below and it will start the video.

Thanks for watching.

Bryan
Enjoyed the video. Those are some sharp blades. They turned out nice. Great work to the both of you. Bryan, I liked the way the large knife turned out. Bacon razors. Regards, Lee

I got to handle those knives last weekend, and I can't say enough good things about them. I really liked the balance on each and the handles were grippy and comfortable! Great work all around.

Great blade designs GKN!!! I really like your smaller "General Purpose" design for food-prep and *general use* type tasks.

However, i *really* like Bryan's modded version of your larger Parang-type design. WOW!!! thats a nice looking chopper. What tasks, in particular, were you thinkign of when you were designing it?

I am under Bryan's good graces and have a design in with him. Seeing more examples of his excellent work is really fueling the fire of anticipation.

2012 is going to be a VERY good year!!!

Both of those are awesome. The big one has all the curves of the nessmuk. Most makers tend to straighten them out and they lose the flowing sine wave. This one is a nessmuk in all it's glory. All be it biggy sized. I like.

Well, Bryan didn't "mod" it, he did however make the blank just the way I wanted it! I drew a knife on paper, and glued the cutout onto 1/4" plywood. He did a great job at bringing it to life. What I was thinking of when I designed this one was, everything.
From combat to camp craft. I think it fits the bill.

Gene,

Great designs!
Man, look at that sweep...

Keep it up!

Thank you sir!

I had some of that in mind as well. I have a friend who said that at first glance! I think it has "nessmuck" in it, and more.
It has a parang in there to..just with a clip point...imagine it without the clip, it would look a lot like many knives out there. The clip was inspired from the Kabar potbelly for sure. I wanted the potbelly knife with MORE!

Yeah, nicely done.
Intrigued by that continuously curved edge.
While I personally favor the beer knife, the large one just begs for some choppin'.
No scandi love?

Sorry - was thinking Bryan had tweaked the design a bit (his looked a bit different in the video to my eyes iirc), but otherwise 99% your drawing.

It sure is a creative design! Looks like you hit the mark.

I sure hope you do a review of it at work!

Frank, Gene sent me the patterns and I did my best to copy his patterns.

Say Gene, did the notch in that bushcrafter turn out like you wanted and does it work with your firesteel like you wanted?
I commented on it in the video I did.

I haven't handled that blank yet Bryan. I think its good to go. I will check it out when I go to the shop this weekend...its over there on the bench.
Looked good at first glance though! If its to small, I can just open it up a bit...no worries.
