I'm trying to be a good girlfriend and get my new beau an awesome present for his birthday in a few months and need some help! He's a knife guy and I know exactly 0.0 things about knives! So I'm looking to y'all!

I know he has the Ulu and the "That's not a knife, This is a knife" knife ;-) See what I mean about the not knowing much.

I was thinking The Woodsman's Pal looks pretty sweet. I know he was talking about really liking the Rambo knife.

Help, please!! This Southern Belle is a fish out of water right now! But I'm trying! ;-)

Becker knives BK9. It's a large bowie and is right at 100. You'll definitely get a jaw drop out of him with that one. :D

Ka-Bar Black Fighting Utility! About 60 bucks and it's really cool if you're looking for a fixed blade weapon looking thing.

The KaBar large bowie. A massive manly beast of a blade, and can be had for about $50-$60. Are you looking just at fixed blades?

Haha I don't know what I'm "looking for" as far as the knife goes, but I'm definitely looking for the jaw drop! :-)

Just need a bit more Info.

we need to know a little about him and what he does with his knifes. I.e. a Hunting knife , a EDC ( everyday carry), I chopper / machete, bush Craft/ camping or collecting.

You spoke of "The Rambo Knife" Most of your knives sold as Rambo knives are going to be poorly made decorative piece that make good wall hangers but will more than likely fail or cause an injury you if you ever needed to use it for what it was build for. THe 'Rambo Knife" is a Survival and Combat knife. Would He get more use out of a quality pocket knife? You will find that a qualty knife will cost any where form 40$ to 500-600$ and well beyond that for a custom made knife from a Hot maker. here are just a few to spark some thought

Fixed Blade;

Swamp Rat Knife works - Great value for a Well build Modern Knife.
Busse Combat Knives - Very well build knifes in a modern combat style best warranty in the bis.
Ontario knife a tool
Blind Horse knives - hand made more classical style fixed bladel knives at a gear price point., My go to hunting knives for both large and small game
SOG
Benchmade- Better known for folding knives but makes soem nice fixed blades
Spyderco - Better known for folding knives but makes soem nice fixed blades

And Too many others to list

Look at the Exchange section here on the fourms Lots great makers selling Fixed blades for fair prices when alot of the time your getting hand made 1 off pieces made form quality materials. They are the Mom and Pop types that might not have the money or the need for fancy websites and large selection of knives but instead they use this forums to sell what are some of the best knives made.

You have landed in the right place for knives all of the forums members are more than willing to help you find a knife for your Boyfriend. We take great pride in spending each others money. Did you see this knife get posted next thing I know Im off ordering a new knife.

Take some time, maybe browse the other subforums here. I'm partial to Becker Knife & Tool for production blades, but there are loads of knives here represented. I'm sure he'll be happy with whatever sharp toy you get him as long as you warn him it's a sharp before he sticks his hand in the packing material.

I'll second the Spyderco recommendation, they make great knives. If your boyfriend already has a couple of fixed blades a high quality folder he can carry everywhere is sure to impress.

Do you want one for him to carry around and use? In that case a folding knife or small fixed blade may be your best bet.

If you're looking for one for him to use sometimes maybe on trips and such, a bigger fixed blade would be nice.

If he's not so much of a user but more of a collector and just enjoys knives for their appeal pick something you think would make his jaw drop.

If we know what he likes and more what you're looking for, we can help out a lot more. =]

I'm a folder girl and love folding knives, so I can help out in that sense. As far as fixed blades though, these other guys will be able to help you far more than I can.

He will probably carry a pocket knife more often and thus think of you when he uses/fondles it. So I would vote for a folder (pocket knife).

Does he care about American made? I believe all of Benchmades knives are American made, some of most other makers are. Others here could tell you way more brands and models that are (some of the knife dorks here could tell you almost all of the production knives*).

*knife dorks meant with all due respect :)

folders:

spyderco sage 1

ZT 0350 blem from Kershawguy

Kershaw knock out..... well pretty much any Kershaw :)

Benchmade griptilian

Fixed blades:

Rat fixed blades

becker

For folders, in addition to Spyderco, there is also

Benchmade (already mentioned)

Kershaw: Lots of choices at lots of price points. Quality is consistent, and many are good values for the money.

Columbia River Knife & Tool: Large variety of styles, some reasonably priced. CRKT has had problems with edge retention. I call them good "gateway knives".....

Cold Steel: Goofy marketing, but solid concepts. The Triad Lock is designed by a premier maker, and it makes for a solid and abuse-resistant lock. Some of these will get you that "clonk" when the jaw hits the floor (XL Espada), but some of them are very expensive.

For fixed blades

Becker: Already mentioned, and hardly a negative thing to be found about them. Good value for the money, but they are made to be used, and they are not shiny or "pretty", except considered in a functional way.

ESEE: Some smaller ones can be found for less than one hundred. Again, made to be used, although the orange and venom green ones are a pleasant assault on the eyes.

There are others, I'm sure, and I hope other people can bring up the ones I've forgotten.

My answer is... for Gods sake get a USA made knife you're very lucky beau can take pride in carrying... not some knife that is a "steal" because it is made in Taiwan. Hang around here for a few months and you'll be teaching him a thing or two about knives. Guaranteed.

If he carries a pocket knife every day I'd recommend a nice folder... Something he'll carry and use all the time and think of you! I would recommend a Spyderco Paramilitary 2. If he carries a fixed blade more often or really likes more outdoorsy stuff buy him an ESEE... Choose an ESEE model you think he'll like best. They are a great knife and can be had for at or under a Benjamin.

My personal taste is much more expensive but only because I'm a completely obsessed knife dork who hangs around places like this forum way too much.

I have heard nothing but great things about the bk9, not only does it sound like his style but is functional and made out of excellent materials, (you can survive in the wilderness with this knife). There are other bowie style knives (and a lot of them) in that price range made out if garbage steels that are nothing but display knives. If he is truly a knife guy he will surely appreciate the becker, you did the right thing coming here.
