New girlfriend, New to knives!

You can't have too many good folders. I'll second what NJHart said: Check out a folder with assisted opening for that "wow" factor in a smaller package.

Let us know what you choose and how it goes.

Will do! I'm leaning toward the BK9 right now, but I have a couple of months to decide! His birthday's in April. My luck, the joker will buy the exact one I want to get him before I get a chance to buy it for him!! Hopefully coming to y'all instead of listening to him talk about the ones he wants I stand a chance of getting one he hasn't thought of yet! hahaha

Here's some important questions:

Is he Left or Right handed?

What sort of work does he do (and does he live/work in a place where larger folders raise eyebrows when whipped out)?

Does he have large hands?

Is he more of a traditional guy (wood/leather), or a more modern fella (fancy materials like carbon-fiber and exotic shapes)?

Does he get into some of the "Tacti-cool" stuff or is he more practical?

Does he take good care of his knives/tools?

Can he sharpen his own knives?

Even if you have no idea what sort of knife you're looking for, that will at least get folks in the right ball-park to answer your questions.

He's right handed.

He's a Vet so he's currently in school. He's talked about wanting a good, black, dive knife.

Wouldn't you like to know what size his hands are ;-) hahaha kidding. I mean, they're average.

I'd say he's more of a traditional guy.

He seems to like cool knives. He loves man toys in general. Put it this way: he just bought a knife throwing dart game on a whim.

I have some time to think on it, but I'll definitely post pictures when I get it in hand. Be hilarious if he's on here and I don't know it! hahaha He's all offering suggestions on his own present.

I gotta admit that zero tolerance 301 with the ranger green handle and the tiger stripes looks pretty sick.

For anything Kershaw/Zero Tolerance, you cannot go wrong with Dave aka Kershawguy here on the forums.
A ZT301 blem (factory second, but mostly little optical flaws) would be a great gift.
There's a s***load of thread about those here on the forum, short version is : They're frickin awesome !

let me preface by saying that in my opinion a knife is a very personal thing to buy for someone. everyone's tastes are different. People ask my girlfriend what kind of knife to get me for gifts, and I usually tell them not to bother...that's not because I don't like getting free knives :D

that said...EZ Bake's post is a good template to get an idea. Don't "surprise" him with a knife. Tell him you would like to get a knife for him and ask him what kind...just the fact that you have paid attention to his likes and want to get involved with them is a big plus.

Another thing- while you're researching knives, you might find something you want for yourself ;)

Great choice. You absolutely can't go wrong on any level with a BK9.

Also, a bit cheaper but by no means bad is the Ka-bar Heavy Bowie. My ex-wife surprised me and got me one for my birthday. Not only was I surprised and happy as can be lol. it's a great knife in many ways. I didn't have the heart to tell her I already had one though, so now I have two and no problem there!.

Best of luck and I think its great that you are thinking of getting him something as thoughtful as that. From a guy's prospective I would be very pleased to say the least!

Best of luck and come back and let us know how it all goes, and welcome to the forums.

Never know, after hanging around here for a while you might find a knife you like for yourself?
It's addicting so be careful!

All the best.

Haha I don't know what I'm "looking for" as far as the knife goes, but I'm definitely looking for the jaw drop! :-)
The jaw drop factor needs a good Bowie. The BK9 is a good one, as is the Ontario Spec-Plus SP10. It's a 9.75 inch bladed monster of a US made knife for the money. It's around $65.
Boker Apparo is a decent Rambo looking knife.
For folders- check out Buck, CRKT, Spyderco, Benchmade and Cold Steel. All have some budget priced folding knives. If you go Buck- try to make sure you get a US made one. The blade steel on the imported ones isn't nearly as good. Cold Steel makes very tough folders, and they put out folders that are huge to the point of absurdity. A 5.5 inch bladed Cold Steel Voyager XL in three different blade shapes, with serrated edge or not, runs around $50-$60.
EDIT: You mentioned his desire for a black dive knife. How about an all-black Spyderco Pacific Salt? It's around $100, about a 4 inch blade, black coated blade, titanium pocket clip, H1 steel that will not rust (I've been swimming in the Atlantic with my Salt 1).

Ha ha I know what you mean about him likely going out and buying the same knife! No, it's unlikely, and he will be thrilled at whatever you buy as long as its a decent tool and not just a flashy toy. It will mean so much to him that you really thought about it and got him what you thought was right.
As I said before, he is a very lucky man, whatever size his hands!

+1 on BK 9 and the Kabar Heavy bowie.......no matter what you get, he will appreciate you taking the time to learn and know his interests. I think you are ready to get a knife for yourself too. Are you the outdoorsy type too? You guys can camp or hike together.
