i just purchased a grizzly 2x72 belt sander. where can i purchase the belts i need to work with steel and titanium? any info will be appreciated.

I have been using trugrit. however I just did inventory on my last order and two of my belts were the wrong grit.

Pop's is great, they know grinding belts and I've never had a mistake from them unless I caused it. Fast shipping for me because I'm only about a 4 hour drive :p

I'm going to give a warning on that grinder. There are 3 openings on the motor underneath the arbors on both sides. They will let some of your grinding waste in the motor, and can ruin it. I suggest putting something over the holes to filter ont the nasty stuff. I use panty hose material. Have fun...and don't lose you platen like some idiot I know. *kicks self in butt*

thanks for the info

I'd recommend looking at http://refractory.elliscustomknifeworks.com/ and picking up a ceramic platen liner. The soft graphite liner will grove very quickly and is too soft for most to really help you feel the grind plane.

For tracking issues, run a line of electric tape in the very middle of the tracking wheel (a couple of layers thick). This will effectively increase the crown a bit and help bets run truer. And filter those openings as was suggested. If you take your time, work carefully, and have lots of patience, you'll be able to grind some great knives on that grinder. Then, if you decide to upgrade in the future to a variable speed grinder, you'll have a much easier time with control.

does this help the belt stay on the wheel or does it make grinding the steel easier? also, why does variable speed provide advantage? i'm sorry to ask,but i am really green, more info, more better.

With the Grizzly, as you grind, depending on how and where you are grinding, the belt will tend to drift side to side away from your pressure. The tape can help decrease this a bit. It goes on the top metal pulley, not the rubber drive pulley.

The Grizzly is a direct drive style grinder. The drive wheel on the motor will spin at the same rpm as the motor. This will give you pretty fast belt speeds. Great for hogging out material and for rough grinding. Where grinding on the grizzly gets more difficult is when you are doing fine finishing or detail work. The speed at which the grinder moves makes control a little more troublesome. Use a light touch, a sure hand, and fresh belts. The joy of a variable speed (whether it's a VFD infinite control or a step pulley) is that you can slow it down and focus on the details instead of fighting the speed of the belt.

If you use it to grind TI you are going to use up a few belts, that stuff takes the grit right off the belt.

Yeah or that. *kicks harder* Thank goodness you are Super Metal Worker or I would be out of a grinder...Damn thing actually works better after you fixed it!! Maybe I should drop all my power tools, and bring them to you so they will work better.

I like Pops for my belts, and Darrin is an awesome guy to buy from, so I agree with Nathan on buying the platen liner from him.
