So, just as soon as I buy myself a new EDC(Jens Anso Mini Rocklobster) that has a 2.75" blade(the old policy limited us to 3" max blades), they change the fargin policy. Did I mention that this pisses me off to no end?

Yes you did, when we spoke the other day, 2 words for you:

Mad Dog ceramic...

Is that 3 words? :)

Hey Dan, as an aside, did you find a way to give yourself rep points? ;)

man, that sucks big time. I am convinced that this policy will spread beyond govt. places, and that sooner or later we will all be in the same boat.

Danbo, is that federal, state, or local government? If it is federal, 18 USC 930 should bar them from disallowing pocketknives with blades of less than 2.5" length.

Federal building. I saw the memo from our Security office. It says anybody bringing in a blade of 2.5" or less will be given the option of taking it back to their car. Anybody bringing a blade in over 2.5" will be arrested or cited.

Hm...did they give you a reason for the new policy, or is your workplace not a democracy? Sounds more like a dictatorship than a democracy.

Why ban knives if there's no reason to? They could also ban breathing, since there's so much "evil" pollution in the air....

That doesnt sound like any sort of federal mandate. Sounds like some local moron trying to make changes. Sucks though.

Similar situation where I work. Security in my building has a no knife directive, I showed them the law and policy manual. No problems anymore, for myself. They still screen others, non-government personnel. Alot of government security departments are coming up with their own policies, if the policy goes against the law, or common sense, bring it up to their/others attention. These days most people just do what there told like good little sheeple! If you work in a federal building, call your representive.

Well, that sucks.

If you have, or can get, a copy of the memo, take it to the Security folks and ask them what the regulatory authority for their action is. Also, if you're in the bargaining unit, go to the Union and see if you can get them involved.

In the building where my company's offices are, they just started a new "upgraded security" program (AKA, "rent is going up again"). They bought a metal detector and placed it at the door.

The funny thing is that the company I work for is dedicated to hunting, hiking, rafting and camping trips. We take equipment very seriously, so all the guides teach safety and maintenance lessons for trainees (and sometimes curious customers). Guns and knives are a very important part of the equipment, as you might already have guessed, and these new security guards wanted us to take them out of our offices, and they sent us a memo asking instructors and guides to stop carrying knives or guns.

My boss had to explain to them that not only were we not going to stop carrying the tools that we lawfully could carry, but that it was company policy to give knives (Opinels and Vic Farmers) to each and every customer that booked a trip with us.

Since we rent a pretty good part of the building, we never had any problems with anybody (in fact when somebody needs something fixed they come knocking on our door) and my dad (who is a judge and president of the judges association in the city) threatened to file a complaint because they were trying to ignore our constitutional rights, the building manager left us alone.

It's one thing if it's govenment policy, or if the private company you work for establishes a policy. It is another thing altogether if an overzealous security guard or chief of security decides that such a policy is needed. the latter types need to be reminded of who works for whom.

Being a Government employee (Federal, State and City) for over 30 years my experience with security officials has been their consistant mis-interpretation of ordinances/laws. Ask questions!

The hospital that I work at has implemented a No Firearms policy. They wrote into the policy (I've read it) that all knives or bladed weapons are considered "Firearms" as far as this policy goes.

So now I can no longer have a small knife of any kind on me.

This is total Crap.

Dang, Danbo, it seems the folks who run your building can never make up their minds. How long do you have until you can retire? I know you're sick of their foolishness.

Isn't it a shame that when some self-important little bureaucrat decides to ban weapons, a knife is a weapon, but when the state finally gets the message and passes "shall issue" legislation, it rarely authorizes knives as well as real firearms?

After thinking about this, or having it in the back of my head, all day, and looking at who will benefit the most from the new policy, I'm thinking that the only beneficiaries are the security officers. No longer will they need to do their security screenings holding a ruler in their hand, measuring who has a 3" or longer/shorter blade, as they won't need to measure knife blade lengths at all.

If there hasn't been a single violent incident involving knives, in your building, why are knives being eliminated? What was the reason for having the 3" blade limit policy? Was there an assault or a murder in your building, by someone using a knife with a 4" blade?

If there has never been an assault or a murder with a knife, in your building, why are there any policies concerning knives? Or is this just a sign that the U.S. government is paranoid?

If a government makes everything illegal, no one will follow the law.

Hmmm...I think it must be karma since you beat me to that Anso by only a few minutes. :D

Seriously, that stinks. I'd just go around banging oranges and apples on the corners of tables during meetings until they turned to mush. Then I'd eat the mush in front of those in the meeting and apologize for not having a knife to cut them open with because everyone in the stupid federal government is an idiot!!!!!!

Present company excepted, of course....
