Hi Folks,
I am in process of building a 2x72 grinder from scratch including turning my own wheels for it but have a question about the the platen? How long should it be? I am planning on making the base, if you will, for the platen, out of 3/8 thick mild steel and face it w/some type of hardface material and eventually w/ceramic glass. Has anybody ever used granite for the platen face? I have a number of tombstone Mfgr's near me and could probably get some scrap cut to size? Thanks, Don
BTW-I think I enjoy making knife making tools as much as knife making!

I made my NWG platen out of 2" angle iron. I made it 6 1/2" long, so that I could put a 6" piece of glass on it with a little overlap.

I have a 2x9 glass on mine and like it alot, gives plenty of room to play with. I think it will be up to you and how much room you have with the belt length.

I'd like to get a full hardened slab of D2 for my platen face, but can't seem to find a piece wide enough. Just be careful with glass etc as it can shatter and fly at your face.

Thanks folks, I think I will go w/8" Seems to be a good size! I am still tempted to try some granite on the face?

I don't mean to spam the forum here, but if anybody is interested I'm making some hardened A2 flat platens right now to include in the upcoming radius platen sale. They're 2 X 8 X .5"
