New Grinder For Husband

Take a look at the OUTLAW II grinder. It has some great features

Gift certs to New Jersey steel baron, Alpha knife supply, Jantz, USA Knifemaker are nice too.

He's an electrician/mechanic/do everything guy, so he will have what he wants/needs for power.
Sorry, no sister. :)
Budget is around $5000
I know that's probably high, but I would much rather pay more for good quality equipment, that will last, than to have to buy something again later.
That way he can also have different things added on if he needs.

I am so glad I found this board - You all have been great!
Have a good one -

Holy crap guys... I think this might be MY wife?! I'M an electric/mechanical, do everything kind of guy!

Ah, who am I kidding... I just built a grinder, and already have a surface grinder. If my wife had 5k laying around it'd be going into the house!

In all seriousness, if I didn't already have a good grinder, AND a surface grinder, AND I had 5k to spend, the TW-90 and SG-1 attachment WOULD be mighty tempting.

While you guys are trying to help her, you may be giving her too many choices to make. Keep it simple - she asked about a grinder recommendation.

Personally, I think few makers will ever really NEED a surface grinder.

Hahahaaa...

She is an equal and we are giving her the same information we would give anyone who asked that question. More information allows for a more informed purchase.

Buy a TW-90 and let him use the remaining funds to buy belts and steel.

Aeide, your budget allows for a TW-90 grinder by Wuertz Machine Works. This machine is a hot rod of a grinder that I have no doubt your husband, as well as any of the knife makers on this forum would be thrilled to have in their shop.

Mighty nice gesture. Remind me of my wife, though I have none of your husbands skills.
Most options mentioned will serve him well. Dozier

Knifemaking is definitely not a cheap hobby depending on what you hope to accomplish.

In my opinion most will hands down say the TW-90 is the best 2x72 knife grinder on the market. It comes with all the options including variable speed, wheel, flat platen, small wheels and tilting base. I don't know anyone who has used one and had a complaint other than the price. If I was going to buy a new grinder and had 3k for the budget it would be this one.

Also I would pick up a few 60 and 120 grit ceramic belts and a bar of 1075/1084/5160 steel. Doesn't have to be the best steel or belts just something to get him by until he orders what he wants. Getting a sweet new grinder and not having any belts or steel to use would make the time tick backwards for me!

Your husband is a lucky guy!

A file guide is a very useful tool as an addition to the grinder. I use a Bruce Bump guide, and others report the Uncle Al's is good too. They help get the plunge cuts nice and even. About $150.00 or so.
