New Grinder is too high.

How about this. Make a Temporary platform. Keep building it up until you are grinding comfortably. 2x's, plywood etc. Actually do some grinding to make sure you are comfortable. Then measure the height between the makeshift riser and the top of the work bench. Figure out how much space you will need on the sides of the grinder. Make a small bench the same depth as the bench you have now by the width you will need and attach it to the left side of your current bench. You might have to move your hammers and maybe the shelf. Make it the height you measured from the riser to the top of the bench. Or a little lower. You can always add a piece of plywood to the top to bring it up higher.
 
Lowe's sells a universal tool stand that I think is about perfect. They are around $60 the I just bolt through a 24"x24"x3/4" plywood top. I leave the majority of the wood sticking to the left, or flush with the right side then holesaw hole on the left to hold components not in use. The stand is made by Kobalt #0025240. I don't want to lower the whole bench because I like the height of it for other tasks. I'm thinking of building a riser out of 2x6's for me to stand on while grinding, and then it could swing out of the way on hinges when not in use. Does this seem like a feasible idea, or does anyone have other suggestions.

Problem fixed! Thanks for not letting me build the platform. I did some reworking of the bench (much less than I thought was going to be needed) and made room for the grinder and my drill press (which was also too high, but I had gotten use to it). Now I just need to learn how to grind on this thing. :)

well if you'd bought a real grinder in the first place you wouldn't of had this problem.. :)

good call... hate to think of what could of happened falling off the platform with a sharpened knife in your hand:eek:
 
Funny what different searches bring up. I just cut 2" off the legs of my work bench my grinder is on, I might have to go another inch.
 
I learned how to grind stding on a cinder block because the owner of the kmg was 6'5 and I'm 5'5
