Im looking for a new grinder, I would like to keep it at or under $1000. I would preferably like something that includes everything needed for use. Something that is 1.5 HP or up, and uses 2" x 72" belts. Thanks for any suggestions and have a great day!

A KMG would be my top choice but is out of your price range. A good complete out of the box setup (that I own and love) is the Pheer grinder. Mine with flat platen, 1hp 3 phase motor and kbac vfd drive ran me $985 shipped. It's a pretty good deal for a first grinder.

Reach out to forum member Brett Mathews, he is making some very well built affordable machines!!

I use a Coote, with motor and step pully and some small wheel attachements you will probably be pretty close to $1000.00 Alot of makers use Coote, they hold up well and really work well, but, not a KMG

The Pheer is a good option. I have one and it's a real grinder and versatile. It can be added to as far as contact wheels, small wheel fork, etc. as needed. I've used the Coote and the Grizzly, both (IMHO) can be somewhat limiting if that's the only machine you have.

You can get a KMG with platen and tool rest, no motor, for $750-ish plus shipping- I'd think long and hard about that. It's a very good machine.

Hi Ryan, I sent you a email with some picture and some info on the grinders I build. For some reason when I try to upload pitures here I always get a fail massege.

Brett if you will email the pics to me I can post them here for you. I'd be interested in seeing your grinders. Email is in my sig.

I'll say up front I'm a friend of Brett's but my endorsement of his grinders stands on the merit of the grinder itself. I can attest to his detail and precision on the grinders. I'm planning on trading my GIB in for one now and add one soon so I have matching tooling.
The tooling interchange with other products like the Bader and TW90 is a huge plus.

I've been very happy thus far with my Pheer. Cost me a little over 1K though. I probably should have spent a little more for the dust proof enclosure too, although I did end up making one.

Build your own. I have built 5 or more in the past 6 months. No Weld Grinder/Sander or NWGS plans will cost you $25 on the internet. The material to make the frame will cost you about $50. I weld my frames so there is no need to clamp it together. To get the machine ready to grind you will spend about $340 on a drive shaft, bearings, drive wheel, tracking wheel, and a contact wheel. Then the veriable speed motor issue comes to play. I looked a that option and thought "Self, that is just too much money to spend right now. Two 4 step pullies will get me started." And I would not change a thing now! The two pullies will cost you about $30 vs. the $800 for a veriable speed motor and controler.

The only complicated part of building this NWGS is the tracking knuckle. Once you figure out that you turn the piece upside down and use a piece of 3/8 inch flat stock for a spacer and a piece of say 1/4 inch stock a clamping surface, you can weld the tabs in place with extream percision.

Don't be afraid to build your own equipment. I find making my own equipment has been as much fun as learning how to make the knives.....

Hey Ryan here are some shots of the grinders Brett is building.....
