I know there's a lot of folks on this forum that like to take proven concepts and 'improve' on them, so I figured I'd offer up a product that might help:

New Grinding Magnet?

...or maybe you could use it to test for your steel going non-magnetic from across the room? The possibilities are endless!

I'm picturing a shop assistant somewhere getting impaled by a 1413-degree blade flying across the room... :D

That is a real magnet.

People lose fingers getting them caught between those size magnets.

This is the biggest weight I have, here. It is capable of picking up my 4 1/2" bench vise and the 25lbs stand holding it.

Finally! A magnet that will securely hold my necker into a sheath! I'm ordering 20....

:D

I saw a mythbusters episode where they used magnets just a bit smaller than that. They had to clear a special path when they were bringing it into their shop just to avoid it attracting to anything metal. Can you imagine what 1224 pounds of pulling force is like when you get it next to something substantial? Sheesh. That would frighten me to have around.

Wouldn't that be just a bit dangerous in a knife shop?:D
i forsee a total shitstorm of flying blades:p

That would be great for collecting ALL the metal dust in the shop. It would look like a Chia pet!:D

I might use a couple of those (if they were a little softer, maybe 50-100lbs) for clamping scales. Not sure there'd be any epoxy left if one used those 1200 pounders.

I've been wondering about incorporating a small rare earth magnet or two with a sheath, as per Deker's joke above but on a much smaller scale. (Have not yet seen a neck sheath I trust.) Anybody know from their own or someone else's experience if this is feasible, or would it just be a nuisance always getting stuck on stuff?

It's quite feasible -- a number of makers do it routinely.

I kept this stle of magnet in my workshop.
It is available for both with electric or without.
Just move the handle to use or unuse.
