The cheap plastic grips on my Camilus Western CROSSTRAIL Titanium series knife.

I wrapped it in electric tape for now, but I’m tired of it. Where can I get new/better ones? Suggestions?

It doesn’t have to be Camillus brand, I would like it to feel comfortable and last a long time - no plastic.

Any suggestions? I know it may not seem like that big of a deal, but 1( I’m tired of having the terrible feel of the electric tape mixed with the cheap plastic, and 2( I’m lost. This is such a huge new world to me (the knife world) - I need some guidance. :)

Unscrew the handle slabs and trace them on a piece of hardwood. Use a rasp and file to get close the the shape you want, then hand sand.

Mark the locations for the hardware, then put a little epoxy on, attach, then wait until epoxy is dry. Finish sanding, and apply a little stain or finish for the wood.

Take your time, it might be a fun project.

Sounds super cool! My dad is a carpenter (as a hobby), so he may be able to help. Thanks!

Thank you. However, I would like to make my own. Just got the knife cleaned up (it was full tang, so I just took the grips off. Got all the old glue cleaned up)

My dad said he has a chunk of laminated hardwood that he has had for years, hopefully it has good color, and will work for grips. :)

(I will make another thread when I actually start to process. I will tag all who answered this one)

avoid laminated hardwood flooring for a handle, the stuff uses some non-natural glues/binders/formaldehyde which may be a problem if you hold it and use it directly for prolonged periods... https://www.cnn.com/2016/03/22/health/health-effect-laminate-wood-flooring/index.html

whynot get a solid chunk of desert ironwood, or even some black locust or osage orange or even walnut?
can probably get off cuts from the local exotic hardwood shops for pennies

Never mind on the DIY handles. I don’t have the time, and I would like my best knife back.

specgrade specgrade , will you please provide a link for the grips from SMKW’s?

I would like some black. (G-10 I believe it’s called?) would also love to get a carbon fiber one, if they make those.

SMKW isn't a supporting dealer, so links aren't allowed. But if you type SMKW into google you won't have any trouble finding their site. Finding what you want on their site may be more problematic. Their search engine sucks, in my opinion.

I think making a handle for a knife like that is a fun project. It doesn't take long, an evening or two. But I already have a couple of good rasps and several choices of hardwood to choose from.

O.B.

What exactly is wrong with the plastic?
They broke to the point of impossibility.

I can’t find it on their website. The search engine is terrible.

How do you suggest I find new grips for it? eBay? Amazon?

I am not convinced that anyone makes replacement grips for that knife. But I really don't know anything about the knife, so don't take my word for it. If you are good with google you might try searching there for grips. Or buy a set of scale slabs, that most of the big online knife dealers sell, and make your own.

O.B.

Since it is such an inexpensive knife (seems to be around $20), doubt you will find ready-made replacement scales, but if you do they may be as much or more than the knife. Making your own would be a great project!

You are 100% correct - their search engine DOES suck.

Ok, thanks guys!

Hopefully my dad will have some spare time when he gets back to help me. :)
