Hey everyone, Newly joined, this is a great forum!
Im newly interested in sharpening and trying freehand a little with varying results. Got a DMT guide that clamps on to the spine of the knife and rides on the table and this helps greatly, but still not super happy with the results. It will shave and do the newsprint cutting trick but You can tell its a little hesitant.
I have a DMT E E fine, and a translucent arkansas that I use as my final stone before stropping, which I do about 5 times each side before it starts going backwards.
So I wonder if I use a Spyderco ultra fine (on order) or a Shapton 16000 (also on order) as my final stone will this be as good as it can get or should I get better results with what I have?
Thanks for any replies, sorry for long winded question!

Spyderco UF -> Shapton 16K stones are good grit progression combo. What type of steel/knife & angle are you working on?

1 AUS-8 on a outdoor edge knife, 2 an old Buck 112-not sure of the steel, and 3 a buck rush that is stamped 290. I tried to match the angles that were on them mostly. the old Buck has been around so I aimed for about 30 deg included angle.

For those steels (aus-8, 440c, 420hc) after dmt ef you should be to slice newsprint (across grain) smoothly, quietly after EEF, whisper afer spydi UF. Hesitant = burr/wire edge, use 20x loupe to make sure the edge apex is clean. Search in bfc or googling around for deburring technique. My Buck 119 at 30* incl sure has nasty burr loves to hang around, that was newb while back.
