Hey guys just wanted to come in and introduce myself, my name is Rod and Im from Gonzales La. I just started making knives as a hobby and actually just finished my first one this past weekend. I built a 2x72 with Oregon Blade Maker parts, and built a small brick propane forge. I have a background in metalwork so I had most of the other equipment. Looking forward to learning from all of the experience on the site! Heres some pics of my first knife, its a 'cowboy scalpel' for castrating bulls. A buddy sent me a pic of one and said he wanted me to build one like it.

Ok here we go

Welcome, Rod!

There is a VAST wealth of information and knowledge on this forum, particularly in the makers area.

Be humble and polite and you will get all of the advice and help you could ever need.

I look forward to seeing your knives - and yes, you have to be a supporting member to attach images.

You can use imagur or some other host to share pictures with us for free.

Good to have you aboard.

** edit - you beat me to the images - nice looking design - very unique!

best

Welcome to BFC, Rob from Gonzales
Like mqqn said, there's a lot of good folks here to share their knowledge and honesty( some you may not want to hear).
Care to elaborate on the steel type, thickness and HT ????? It's a nice purpose made piece. There is a knifemakers forum you need to check out as well as the Maintenance forum. Lots of good stuff to read.
Hope to see more of your work.

It's D2, slightly less than 3/16". Was a planer blade in its previous life. I heated until non magnetic then oil quenched, then tempered in the oven. It's my first 'go round with all of it, so obviously Im still learning the HT process.

Welcome aboard from Bunkie, La.

Sent via telegraph with the same fingers I use to sip whiskey.

That looks like a pretty outstanding first knife to me. I know that my first, second, and third knives did not look that good... and I have yet to make a fourth.

Thanks! After I sanded the micarta to shape and oiled it to make the grain show up I was like "dang this actually worked" lol
