Hi Everyone. I've been lurking on this website reading/learning as much as possible. Last 1 Sept 2015, I retired from active duty Military after 20 yrs, 2 months, 3 days. I joined when I was 17 so yeah, still a young'in by many folks standards. Single, no kids, no ex'es. I worked, and moved way too much to settle down while I was in. I moved back home to eastern Iowa right along the Mississippi River last summer ( I can hit the main channel with a slingshot). Helped my brothers farm, put up by ourselves a new 60'x100' tin building this summer/fall. Now it's cold up here, and I'm awaiting spring to go bass/trout fishing this spring!

This Christmas I asked for, got a new Smith's Tri-hone, and a very Dark Lansky Arkansas Stone. I picked up a whitish Lansky Arkansas stone here 3 weeks ago, and it works perfect between those two setups. Since Christmas, I've sharpened around 70+ knives, and also 6+ block knife sets for family/friends by hand. It's only for my enjoyment/hobby. They've brought me "bent" , "chipped" :eek:and generally butter knife dull sets, and I got them reworked back to pretty darn sharp by hand. I know it's not 4k-8k+ sharp.. but sharp enough that they were more than happy with them. It gives me things to work/learn on that I can't hurt. I've also done quit a few fillet knives, and some high carbon (pre-1968) run knives that were my grandpa's from when my mom was a kid. Current project is an old Rapala wooden handle knife with a brass piece on the end. I saddle soaped the leather sheath, and milk oiled it. I've hand sharpened it, block sanded handle by hand since the wood on it had 80% of the clear coat peeled off. I've used permanent super fine tip marker to bring out the "Rapala" name on the wood handle. It will get "Golden Oak" stained, Satin cleared before I'm done with it. If you guys want to see, I can post up another thread with some pics?! I've been spying the fiddlebacks; a blue handle one with green underlay is what i'm awaiting to be posted for sale (hint, hint) :dejection: I have to say: many, many of you folks have/make some amazing knives! Thanks for having such an information/picture website!

I recently found/ordered a Columbia River (CRKT) Hunt'N Fisch, and am waiting for it to arrive. :D

Other EDC's flippers: I run are a SOG Knives Trident Tanto Black, Sog wooden handle twitch II, orange handle Kershaw Ken Onion among a few others. If you'd like to see them, just ask and I'll post pics.

I do all my sharpening with a Viel S3 1x42 belt grinder. It can be had for $300 and mine has paid for itself many times over. I use a leather stropping belt with green chrome polish for final honing.

You can see it in this video.

I don't think I'll EVER use a grinder after going to a local gun/knife show; and seeing the 60 grit grinds this guy was trying to show off/sell... I cringed... he had a box of older high carbon knives just thrown in a box.. I almost threw up. Then another knife vendor trying to sell a sharpening system was showing off cutting strips of paper; with a $300+ Japanese kitchen knife saying, "If you buy blah blah blah, you can have knives this sharp too". I wanted to say, "Yeah i can have a knife just like that with the help of a credit card."

It's just a personal preference..... I enjoy seeing, feeling the blade on the stone, and hearing how the stone/blade interact.. no creepy intentions; seriously folks. I guess I get pride for taking something battered from lots of work, and being able to make it look/perform as it was intended to be. It's like making something right that's seen too many things done wrong to it?! Sentimental? Maybe... but I enjoy sharpening by hand with stones. :) The 2 sharpest knives I've sharpened.. spent a lot of time on... a $5 kitchen knife that my Mom gave me; saw how much work I put into it and gave it to me. The other... "Don't laugh"... my Rambo II knife... that I cut trees down with after I bought it to open up a fishing spot where there lurked a 10+ lb bass that I never caught. Can't say I didn't try to catch him?! Both those knifes have shaved skin off my thumb fingerprint for a 1/4" while sharpening them ...and not drawn blood. :)

Other 2 knives that I've resharpened that are nice in my book that I've resharpened... My Sog Swingblade that cleaned 3x 10 pt Iowa whitetails this year, and was still sharp.. but I didn't like the grind groves in it, and my brothers Outdoor Edge Swingblaze SZ-20N SwingBlade. Personally, I like the SOG better; as it held it's edge compared to resharpening buck knives after ever 2 deer in comparison. My niece stole my SOG swingblade so she could skin/clean her 10 pt buck... and lavished me with the buck knives! :P Yes, We harvested 1x 11 pt buck (Bow),and 3x 10 pt bucks this year. It was crazy to see how my 2 brothers, Niece and I liked how that SOG swingblade skinned, and just kept going. It was the first year I was back to hunt, they got all the deer... but I killed 2x coyotes with my 12g slugs, and I got to see my first bobcat in the wild in Iowa. :)

Welcome! And thank you for your service - it's very much appreciated!

And if you're interested in Bird-n-Trout style knives, check out the L.T. Wright Coyote - here's mine in Snakeskin Micarta:

Btw, to post pics you need to upload them to an image hosting site like Photobucket, Flikr, ImageShack, etc. Then on the hosting site, you simply Copy the IMG link and Paste it here. Easy peasy.

+1 There are a few of us around here, I didn't do 20+ though! Congrats on your retirement, and best of luck in your new hobbies.
I also think fiddleback knives look fantastic, and we always like to see pics. Take care, and welcome to BF.
