Hi. New to the forums but have been playing with knives for years. I have a couple of switchblades and a OTF I just got on the exchange. I am looking to buy a new knife and don't have many places local to test them out. What I am looking for is a cross between the size of the Gerber gator folder, but a little thiner and a Sears Craftsman utility knife. I have both and love the solid feel and heft of the all metal sears knife. I am not picky about the scales. I hope to spend less than $50. I have been looking online at the Spyderco Tenacious, but I know it is not what I just descibed.

If you are digging full steel handles , Spyderco's Byrd offers some selections under your price range.

linky

Kershaw Skyline
Kershaw OD-1
Boker Trance
Spyderco Tenacious
The entire Byrd line.

Those are some of the best choices in this price range.

Is it the heft of the utility knife you like ? A wharncliffe/sheepsfoot style blade? I guess I'm a little puzzled on what features you are looking for in a knife. More info would help. A few somewhat "hefty" knives in your price range: Kabar Mule, Kershaw Storm, Buck 110, and maybe CRKT m18/21 (about the only CRKT I'd recommend).

Btw, welcome to BF.

Tenacious or its little brother persistence would be great knives for what you described

Thank for the ideas. So far I like the following
Kershaw Skyline
Spyderco Tenacious
I guess what I was decribing in my 1st post was realy the buck 110. But I am looking for somthing a little diferent.

I am more of a Spyderco/Benchmade guy, but I just scored a Skyline very cheap and really like it. The flipper opening is really starting to grow on me. I definitely see more Kershaw's in my future. While it is very solid, I don't associate the word "heft" with it, it is actually one of the lightest knives I own which is what first drew me to it. It just barely feels heavier than my FRN Delica. It is very comfortable in the pocket. If its a budget "hefty" knife you want, i suggest the Byrd G-10 Cara Cara. I have yet to handle the Tenacious or Persistence though, so I personally cannot compare them.

Well, in my experience, I think most CRKT and Spyderco knives will do what you are asking. For a cheap utility knife, I really like my Spyderco Byrd. It has stood up well to a week of moving. It fits in your pocket very easy. The blade shape gives a good working angle for using the point on tape, cardboard, etc. The blade profile is easy to sharpen (flat). The lock seems pretty solid. Like all folders though, I'm not sure how much of a side load it could take. Not sure why, but all knives eventualy get an accidental or intentional side load put on them. Prying, steping on it, etc. You hate that to be the death of a knife you like! There is only 1 negative so far. The steel is not very stainless. I was powerwashing and ended up with wet shorts where the knife was. . .I thought, this is a utility knife, it can take some abuse. When I pulled it out and looked at it 5 or 6 hours later, it had just a dab of rust growing. All that washed away when I wiped it down with Break Free. Well, back at it again!
