Hey guys looking for a camp/utility knife around the $250 range.

I was all set on a Koster MUCK but I found out his books are closed till 2016.

I was also looking at the Bark River strike force but that seems to be more of a fighter. I guess I am looking for suggestions whether that be a manufacturer or a specific model.

I appreciate the help

Bark River definitely had a lot of really, really great designs. All of my experiences with them have screamed quality and held up incredibly well. I'm hoping to get my hands on a Bravo 1.5 at some point to fill that do-everything camp/utility knife slot. Great steels and great designs and great construction.

Hey there OP. First of all, welcome to the forum!!

As to your question, give us some more specifics, i.e. blade length you prefer, do you want it for chopping or batoning around camp, preference of choil or not, etc. Lots of blades to consider for $250.

swamp rat rodent series 5,6,7 (i have the 6 ) recently discontinued but pretty easy to find on the exchange.they are insane beasts that will satisfy you with every use.no question asked warranty..you abuse the knife doesnt void warranty..nothing does.thats saying something.

Don't let the stock photos fool you with the use of the BRKT strike force. It has the same heat treat and A2 steel that a lot of their blades have and would be suited for use in the woods just as it would be attached to someones vest stuck in their closet.

I think for most uses that will be a little to much blade. I'd think you'd be better suited with a Bravo 1 variant. A few other options to look at may be the Koster Bushmaster or Ambush Alpha. Koster has a great looking knife and the new run of Alphas just hit stores this week.

I guess I would be looking for something in the 6 inch range. I would be like to able to use it for light chopping and batoning but would use an ax or hatchet for heavier work if need be and I could live with or without a choil.

Im really open to most options at this point.

That helps younggun

For a 6" in the $250 range the GSO6 from Survive!Knives or the Rodent 6 from SwampRat are both good choices. They will withstand far more than light use and have excellent warranties. The GSO6 is choilless, the R6 has a choil and top guard. The GSO is in 3V and the SwampRat is in SR101.

You might also consider the SwampRat Ratmandu and the GSO 5.1. These two are slightly smaller, at about a 5-1/4" blade length. You'll find a lot of support for these two particular blades. They are excellent field blades from good companies.

Both GSO's will push your $250 limit, but include quality kydex sheaths. The SwampRats are well under your limit, but you will need to find a sheath. (Many of the makers here have these blades on hand and can crank out a quality sheath in a short period of time). Watching the exchange and being ready to buy will be the best for the GSO's. The Rats can be ordered from the company but you will have a 'few' weeks wait. Luckily they hit the exchange at reasonable prices regularly, and can sometimes be found with a sheath included. The Ratmandu may be the best bang-for-your-buck knife out there right now.

Since you mentioned you were open to most options at this point, I'd also recommend you take a look at the ScrapYard 711. It is a little larger, a 7" blade, but is a fine camp knife.

Those would be my choices, but you've got a lot of other fine options. Good luck in your search.

I really am leaning towards the Bark River Bravo 1.5 in A2.

That would be a fine choice as well. And readily available on the market. Here's pics of a couple bravo 2's. Same as the 1.5 except for the blade length
