New Guy Seeks Tough Folder

Yup.., I have to admit they are really strong knives for the $$$. I'm not crazy about the looks (myself).., but a very good value.., and certainly a good strong user!

Glad you like the knife, Eager. You won't be dissapointed.

Also, I forget to say: Welcome to the Forums!:D

Thanks for the welcome guys. I've been enjoying the info. I've sort of renewed my interest in knives recently. I'm a gun enthusiast and frequent several of the gun boards (FAL FILES, AR-15.com, 1911, HS2000. But through cowboy shooting interest was looking at historical replica knives and found this board. Well, I haven't yet got the "tradition" fixed blade I seek (but a Dan Farr antelope or stag scaled hunting knife looks very good  ), but in the mean time, I learned that Opinels were good, and I saw some in the new mall cutlery shop so I picked up a couple for less than $10 ea. I customized them I bit. Very nice and useful. Of course I also learned of the Grecos. I've been carrying the Greco flat ground folder. It's excellent. I guess I got lucky because it opens easily with one hand without even hurting my soft hands, and closes easily too. Is sharp and is what I wanted. It will be my x-mas gift from my wife and kids to myself. I haven't bought a knife in many years since recently. So I need some. Lucky me. Also for x-mas I'm going to order a Norwegian Helle fixed blade. I've wanted a scandanavian knife for years. The search function is really great. I've really been enjoying this site. :D

Glad to hear that you got a Greco. They are truley some of the toughest folders on the market. I have had mine for about a month and I still haven't broken it in but at least I know that the lock isn't going to fail    Greco makes some nice folders although most are pretty large and heavy. I also have one of his friction folders which for 25 dollars is quite a bargain.

Yes, the friction folder is a cute little industrial-strength knife! :) I couldn't believe how thick the scales are, but it's very comfortable to hold.

Eager, if you are going to get a Helle (or any other Scandinavian) be sure to check out Ragnar's Ragweed Forge. His website doesn't only sell knives, he's also got other traditional items, and an unbelievable amount of information in his links to Nordic culture: This is the home of Ragnar's Ragweed Forge. Here you'll find information about knives, both historical and modern, blacksmithing, Vikings, Buckskinners, living history, and the SCA. There's an on-line catalog of knives, ironwork, Viking and Celtic jewelry, and other historical items.

If you get a Greco, I will go along with the suggestion that you also get the optional scales with it. I bought one when they were on sale a while back and that's the first thing that I wanted to change. The handle made of two relatively thin pieces of metal. It's not like you are going to bend them, I just wanted a thicker handle to grab onto and I think that it would much more comfortable in the long run.

The second is the lack of a pocket clip, although I hear that they are going to offer a clip soon or they already do. I just don't like the belt pouch that comes with it.

Overall, you would be very hard pressed to find a tougher knife for any price.
