Hows it going?
I've been looking at the Izula for the longest time and never really understood what the hype was behind them. I'm not a fixed blade person and many WA cities have a big no no against fixed blades, so I never really got around to them. The only fixed blades I have are my two Busses, Hg-55 and a fatty ASH-1, neither of which see ANY carry time.:thumbdn:

I finally saw an Izula in person at the last gun show I worked. The gentleman had a tan one that was wrapped in Oranage Cord. Once I put that sucker in my hand, I was amazed at how simple, and solid it felt. I just knew I had to have one.

One of my cloestest friends birthday is coming up so I knew I had to get him a gift he would appreciate but was also in my price range (Left my job in March...bad idea hah!). The way I figured was well if I was paying for shipping, might as well pick one up for myself and to get my moneys worth...

Here are a few pics of everything today.

Hmm wonder whats in the box!?!?!?

Welcome! My Izula is my EDC. It is wrapped in od green paracord and I wear it horizontally on my belt.

hey i recognize your unboxing threads. dont you usually stalk the mailman? :p

the izula is a great knife! just like the sebenza ;) :D

Congrats and welcome! The Izula is an awesome little blade!

Like that CRK also!

Funny you bring that up! I was thinking to myself that I didn't get the mailman shot today. NGK sent me the tracking code for USPS but the code didn't work so I didn't know when it was coming in. I ordered it Friday and did the Priority mail option which is usually 2-3 business days. They sent it out Friday so I figured I would get it either Tuesday or Wednesday.. But sure enough it came in today technically the 2nd business day. :D

Wish I was your friend I would gladly like one for a gift, welcome to the ESEE family!

I really owe this friend. He bought me my first CRK CGG Small Sebenza for my graduation present from the University of Washington at the end of 2008. He also gave me his Busse HG-55 with Mashcat sheath. The HG-55 was in perfect condition and black finish didn't have a mark on it.

Since I'm not working at the moment, I can't afford to help him with his INFI fix so I figured next best thing would be the IZULA.

sooner is always better than later :D ;)

i think you are gonna really like the izula, even more so with scales. even if you can't legally EDC it, it would be great for around the house and outdoors type stuff.

I was not impressed with the factory edge, was barely shaving sharp. The tan Izula was uniformly shaving sharp. I know this happens from time to time with every manufacture since most are done by hand. This is not an issue for me since I sharpen all my knives when I get them anyways. I forget how easy it is to sharpen 1095!

My sharpening system consists of a sharpmaker with UF rods and a strop loaded with Chromium Oxide. I also have an edge pro if I need to do any reprofiling. To my amazement, the Izula worked perfectly with the Sharpmaker at the 40º. I'm sure the 30º setting would work too, but I figured I rather have a more durable edge for this knife.

I always start using the sharpie method.

We can see that at the 40º setting we are hitting the very edge.

Perfect if you ask me!

Sorry for the "ok" pictures. My Point and shoot has a joke for macro function so I use my mobile phone "Nexus One" and use my 10X loupe as the macro lenses. I think my phone works way better then my point and shoot...:D

Lets see how well this little tough ant will do. I will not stop until the knife can no longer cut cardboard or the bin can no longer hold anymore.

Here is the recycle bin it will go into.

Let the test begin.....:foot:

They just had the 10k mark for the izula's and you are sporting an 10314 already. They really are flying!

That IS a lot of cardboard, gonna be a tough one.

Well the test took a lot longer then I thought it would. Unfortunately I have to say that the cardboard beat the Izula...but that little sucker put up a GREAT fight.

During the test, I had good ole George to cheer me on!

This is how much I had left.

You can see that the bin is almost full.

I only suffered a small roll probably due to somthing in the cardboard. The only real "damage" is the coating has smoothed out.

I had to stop when the knife would no longer cut the cardboard, but it just kind of pushed it. The knife could barely even cut paper without ripping.

Did I mention how easy it is to get 1095 back up to hair whittling sharp?

Better shots of the coating wear.

All in all I think the Izula had a great first day! :D

Wonder what tomorrow will bring? My hands are a bit raw and I can see the start of some blisters starting to set. I will take pics of it tomorrow when they are more visible lol!

After all done and said, I think for a small knife, this sucker is tough. 1095 steel is no slouch. The overall knife is small, and I feel that the micarta inserts is a must for any heavy duty work. It filled my palm nicely and gave me a better sense of security if you will.

Just curious how long it takes to reprofile a blade using rods etc..

Doesn't anyone here use belt sanders to sharpen?

I use to only use stones period, but now have converted entirely over to belt sander...
