New Guy, Waiting for my BK2

Hi everyone, I'm Steve.
Waiting for my new BK2 to arrive and I'm hoping I made the right choice. I was looking for a serious camp knife and the BK2 is obviously that, but I found out about the 16 after placing my order. Now, I can't help feeling that the smaller brother would've been the better way to go. Some background: I've got my small folders and a few Leatherman tools, but I wanted a fixed blade for camping. At first I was looking into the classic USMC Kabar, soon determined that wasn't what I was looking for, and then was turned onto the BK2 and ESEE 5, the Gerber LMF II was also in the running. Found a great deal on the 2 from an Arfcom member, so that did it. I was sold.

Past couple of days I've discovered you guys, modding your knives and sheaths, and really using your gear. Love it. I'm certain I'll end up with a leather sheath for the 2, if I keep it, that is. If it really does seem too damned big, I can either sell it and pick up a 16... or (and I have a feeling this will be a popular option), keep it for the man-size tasks it'll excel at and pick up a 16 anyway, when I can afford it.

Definitely glad I found this forum, thanks guys. Open to advice and I'll be sure to post pictures when the 2 arrives.
Steve

Keep it buy them Both. Heck buy them all.. Thats what I am doing 1 at a time..lol Welcome to the forum bro and enjoy..

Welcome to the forum. The 2 is a hell of a blade.

You won't regret the BK2. Keep it. Then get more as the budget allows. I will admit that I find it a bit thick and heavy for my general stuff. The BK10 was more what I was looking for when I got the BK2. The BK16 is also a great general blade but I prefer my Ka-Bar Navy MK1. It has a nice fullsize handle that fills my hand better than my BK16.

I would say keep the BK2 and if money is tight get a mora to pair with the BK2 to hold you over. Mora knives are inexpensive but have great quality and preform amazingly.

And get a BK9. You can't not have a BK9.

What kind of scales are those, BSmith? Looks a lot grippier than the OEM type - though, I haven't gotten the chance to try 'em out yet.

The BK2 is a cool knife. Mine is in pawn and I miss it much.

Put the BK2 in your back pack and keep it there until it is needed.

I would get a BK9 also and tie it to your pack straps.

I would then get a BK16 or a USMC and wear it for general use.

Most all knive are fine as long as you know how they are built and what their limmits are. I love my USMC but I know it has a thin tang and will not take as much punishment as a Fallkniven A1 so I do not treat it like one and if I do treat it like one I understand that it will possably break.

Learn how the BK2 is made and its limmits if it has any and use it in that mannor.

Maybe you could lean how to convex a edge and convex the BK2, it could not hurt it and it will probably help it.

As to a sheath I would just use the one it has. The handle strap will probably come off soon but that is ok. Just take all the nylon webing off and just use the part that covers the blade.

Theyre factory scales, I just stipple em. Its a process of using a soldering iron to texture the surface. I do all my large scales that way, it give exceptional grip, and reduces hot spots.

I know how you feel Steve. I fell in love with the 16 after I pulled the trigger on the 2, but my 14 is my absolute fav!!!

Here they are. All purchased within my first 3 months of being here on BF.

So, what you're telling me is I'm about to buy a lot more knives? Aw, shoot. Why do hobbies have to be so expensive? I mountain bike, I shoot, hike. Nothing's cheap.

Keep it and enter the contests here. I have won several knives from Ethan. Maybe you can get a 16 He gave away 3 of them last month.

Yeah its usually on a sticky at the top. They don't do them every month but pretty regularly. Some you have to be a Beckerhead some are for anyone. Lots of fun though.

Question about sharpening. I have a Gatco Edgemate kit w/pedestal that I use for pocketknives and multi-tools - Will it be up to the task for the BK2? I see talk of stones and various other sharpening methods that I'll have to learn in time.
