Hi there, new guy getting going with knife making. I've had the urge for some time but now have the space and disposable income to begin.

I have a 2x42 and assortment of files, angle grinder, bought some other things based on research from this forum, read most of the links 1-10 parts for newbies etc. I have some .149 cpm154 from NJ steel Baron and have ground a few blanks, a few of which have halfway decent and symmetrical plunges ( with huge room for improvement).

I've been getting into the posts the disk grinders. Ability to grind things flat and to use inexpensive sheet paper.

I haven't been able to find tutorials or videos on how one would grind on a disk. Anyone have anything like that? In have the starter belt grinder, might a reversible variable speed disk grinder be a good next equipment upgrade?

Any guidance would be appreciated

send me an email and i'll send you 3 vids of a buddy i was teaching how to grind. send your number too and i'll give you a call and talk you through grinding on it. there is a trick to grinding and if you do it wrong, you can mess up what you are grinding by changing the angle on your blank. i grind freehand and not on a table so that might make a difference. one thing about grinding on a talbe, the blade can slip between the disk and table if you grind edge down.

Welcome to the forums! Nice to see another Minnesota resident looking to get into knife making!! Not that many of us as far as I can tell. I am new to knifemaking but have 9 now under my belt and I would love to help you as much as I can. Please email me at mccandrmatt (at) gmail (dot) com I am in Delano but my shop is in Hopkins

Thanks all for the helpful replies.1234567890 thanks for that link. Those videos will keep me busy for a while.

Just got off the phone with Richard J. Great guy and got me some good ideas on steels to work with and heat treating.

mccandmatt I'll be sending you out an email for sure. Right now I'm working (on hobbies) out of my garage in St. Michael but I work in the west metro not far from Hopkins.

Worked today on working the bevels back towards the spine. Good lighting a must to be able to see the gap between the belt and the blade. Came out halfway decent.

Disc grinders are not then end all to doing a good job flat grinding and so forth. I have not found the sand paper to be cheap when using mine which is a variable speed with changeable discs that are held on with magnets. It does for me remove a lot of hand finishing which at my age helps a lot. A machine like mine would probably sell for $800 or so . If you don't have a good 2 X 72 put your money there first. Frank

Sugarcreek forge on youtube does a video of grinding a knife on a disk. I also believe kyley harris from ckc knives has a video on it.

Posting the links to the vids here might be good for the next user that searches on the same topic.

Being in the same boat (looking at disk grinders) I have a question. How hard is it to grind longer than 4.5" blades on a flat disk? Most of mine are about 6"

here is a tip for you guys. instead of wasting whatever abrasive you have on the disk grinding on steel, get some hardwood and make blanks from it. it is a must to use a guide like i have when starting out. it will be 1 less thing to worry about and later on if you want to try without the guide, you can. you can see the guide clamped to the blade in my vids and in the pictures.

i will be glad to call anyone in the states or canada with questions and give you some tips to keep you from wasting steel.
