Greetings from the great state of Idaho!!
This is my first post and I have a question. I am looking for a good general purpose knife for the outdoors. My son and I hunt, fish and camp a good deal in this beautiful state. I am looking at the Beckers but I have also been studying the Kabar D2 Extreme and the RAT knives. I know that everyone has their own factory loyalty but I would appreciate some input.
Thanks in advance

The BK2 is a great camp knife at a fantastic price point. It's hard to beat. ESEE knives are great knives too, just more money for a similar product. You just need to weigh function versus cost.

You can't go wrong either way though.

Beckers are great general purpose survival knives.... THey a tough as nails.. and very very fair in regards to price... FOr a starter why dont you look in to getting a bk-11 ( the becker 3 finger neck knife) great little woods bumming blade... and it can be had for about 35 bucks.. Great first investment to see whether you like it or not.... If you get it and don't like it it won;t be difficult to trade or sell...
for an overall heavy use survival blade... I love the bk7
again the same logic applies (low cost for what you are getting and not hard to get rid of, if you decide to go another route)
That's my 2 cents fwiw

I say, buy the BK7 and the necker. Then you will have a knife in the size you need. The 7 is a little large for cleaning fish, easily. You will be happy with your purchase. :D

I own the ka-bar D2 extreme and several ESEE knives. Now while the kabar is a very nice knife and has a good edge and rust resistance I would not suggest it as a outdoor knife due to its rat-tang and clip-point blade. What would be geat is a ESEE-6 and a Izula. Now if your tight on money go with what cody1 suggested Im sure that will fit you just fine.

Buy the BK-2: great all around knife.

Oh, and welcome aboard Blade Forums, and to the Becker Forum, too.

Dittos on dawsonbob. Welcome to the forum, and a BK-2 can be had for about $60. Not a better knife for the money.

Welcome to the forum. I have a BK-2 and it's fantastic for what you described, at a decent price also!

All good info guys. I have always wanted a Becker every since reading about them a couple of years ago. The decision is with Becker. Now, the final decision..........exactly which one!

No matter which one you get, you'll be getting a great knife, at a great price, and you'll be happy with it. As I mentioned, I suggest the BK-2 to start with (I say start with, because once you have one, you'll want to be the first on your block to collect the whole set).

To me, the BK-2 hits the sweet spot for size and usability, and it's been my go-to knife for quite awhile.

HA! Now REALLY welcome to the forum. You have entered the initiation phase. Let the hazing begin!
"Which one?" THAT is the question that has plagued MANY, and you will find no end of threads of a similar note. I myself went for the 2 first, (and everyone who bought a 9 first probably just scoffed.) :D That's just the way it is. But you can be certain whichever you get, you will LOVE.

Hey Balding Eagle.....

Welcome to Blade Forums and welcome to the neighborhood......I am glad I got in here before I had to twist myself into knots trying to lead you gently down the path to Becker Knives past the temptations of Brother Jeff's almost as fine cutlery(LOL)......My current favorite combo is either a BK2 and a Necker or a BK9 and a Necker..... The Necker does all the little stuff very well and the BK9 is a dynamite chopper, splitter, clearer, etc, etc.......If the Nine seems too big for your taste then the BK2 is likely your best bet.....There is a reason the 2 has back order problems from time to time.....I use a BK11 everyday during the heating season and I have taken to using the Nine almost exclusively for batonning out fatwood (or rich pine) and oak splints.....I love the way the Nine slices thru saplings (we clear a lot of small (1-3 inch) pine on our place and the Nine makes it (almost) effortless.........

Hope this is of some help........Thank you for your interest and I hope you enjoy how the Beckers work for you and your son where it counts....in the bush......

All Best....

if it doesn't have to be a "right now" purchase, there's a new necker coming out - a combination of the BK11 (necker) blade and the ESEE Izula handle -- truly looks like it wil be the best of both worlds. (unless you "need" the bottle opener on the end of the BK11)
The BK2 Campanion is a great blade size/shape for camp chores and tank tough.
Another thought would be the new magnum camp knife. (not sure if it's in full production yet, either)
good luck and happy hunting!

All of you are the best for taking the time to give me kind words of advice. And for the man himself, Ethan, put his 2 cents worth in! Having spent the last 24 years in the Air Force, I have often times been in situations where people arent quite so friendly. I am finally in a place where I can call home and get out and enjoy the great outdoors with my son. I hope to pull the trigger soon and I will surely let you all know what I end up with .
All the best and God Bless America!!

I do have another question that I meant to include in my last post. Regarding the BK11 Necker. Of the two models, is the BK11CSM the same San Mai steel that Cold Steel touts so much? And, is it worth the difference in cost? Can you explain why I should choose one over the other? Sorry for all the questions.
All the best and God Bless America

Hey Balding Eagle......

The CSM model was a limited run because the steel was too pretty to NOT do SOMETHING with it......Great stuff but, pricey.....Mine rarely goes to the field....The Hitachi whit steel that actually does the cutting has a theoretical edge over the 1095CroVan but, not by much......If cost is a consideration go with the CroVan.......

Please let me take this opportunity to thank you for your service to my family and to our country !!!!....

All Best....

I just wanna say that I love my BK-2 I have not stopped tooling around with it since it came in the mail but I have never been a combat situation so I lack that experience to make that call but I am sure if you had to you could take somebody down with it

I also do a bunch of fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, etc... I own many different knives from many different companies and I have no loyalty to any of them past the loyalty that their knives show to me. Period.

First off, you cannot go wrong with the Becker line, or the ESEE line. Two of my favorite companies of any knife makers, production or custom. From customer service, to quality, to performance, to pricing....

That being said, get yourself a Mora 911 for those light duty camp chores, a Victorinox Hunter or Farmer, and the BK 2. You will come in around $90 for all three which will put you under what you can buy just one ESEE for and you will have all of your bases covered from skinning, to filleting, to heavy duty camp/survival chores.

the BK2 has been my go-to hunting/camping/fishing knife for 6 years now, and you CANT go wrong with it. it is the CAMPanion
