hello i'm new here never made a knife before had some mild steel lay'n around got the shape i want was wondering if i heat treat it w/ motor oil or should i use something else help please thanx welder:confused:

Start by reading all the tutorials you can find about metallurgy and heat treating. You will immediately find that mils steel won't work since it can't be heat treated. Carbon is the critical thing and you need something with about .70-1.00 % C to make a blade.

thanks for lettin me know this info i was'nt sure i was told i could use kasinite also this is why i join the forum i could use old files right have a lot of them to practice on lols:confused:

Kasenit will give a very thin case of high hardness. Sharpening the knife would very quickly cut through to the soft steel underneath, which would ruin the edge.

Old files are a common source of blade stock for homemade knives. I've heard that some modern files are made using methods than don't lend themselves to good blades, but the few files I've used for blades have worked out fine. Mystery steel is always a bit of a risk, though.

hey guys i'll try and post a pic of what i got so far of my design and what the knife looks like let me know what ya think i'll use this as a practice blade thanx for all your help weld

In all honesty it certainly looks better than my first knife. What did you make it out of?
