new guy

New England and the New York area ( not the city) are full of makers. A look in the back of a "KNIVES" annual will turn up many. The New England Bladesmiths Guild holds several seminars and other events during the year. Indian George and several others in MA and the surrounding area hold hammer-in events often. These are weekend or one day events where lots of makers come together, from newbie to old pro, and have fun learning from each other and demonstrating skills. The American Bladesmith Society also holds several training events yearly. They have a youth program, and a special membership rate for youth. The ABS also has several schools, on in New England, to teach knife making skills.

A post from one of your parents will help, because we generally don't get too involved directly with minors. However, many smiths will train a youth with parental cooperation.
Keep reading, slow down and take your time ( hard to do when you are 15), and try to find a nearby maker. ( The fact that you don't know one doesn't mean that there may not be one down the street from you.)

thanks i'll keep looking for local knife makers around me and MA is kinda far for me to ask my parents to drive me. they dont care im getting into knives but i doubt they will be up for taking me for a 2-3 hour car drive for a one day event that theyre not even interested in. but i dont think they will mind driving me to the city once a week for a few hours so i can learn from another knife maker. and i just wanted to add that i wont start making knives for a while since school is starting and school means soccer and wrestling are going to be a big part of my free time but i wont stop looking at this stuff i will just hold off on starting my own. thanks again for all your answers
