I'm still trying to figure out what's up with a few things...
Regarding the different colors and terms folks tend to use.
- Skunk = black/tan with black dominating?
- Zebra = black/tan with tan (looks white) dominating?
- What looks like black/white is referred to as black/tan?
Black and tan is black and tan. People just call them different names on different knives for fun. Every batch of black and tan G-10 Busse gets is a bit different. Every one will vary in shade and color dominance, but it is all black and tan.
Also, regarding G10 and Micarta, are the following true?
- G10 is generally more 'vivid' than Micarta.
- Micarta will become 'vivid' if you oil it with mineral oil. Is there any downside to doing this, i.e. will the grip feel oily?
- Micarta is more forgiving as G10 can chip.
- You can sand Micarta. Can you sand G10?
1. Yes, very. Especially since most of the Micarta Busse uses is canvas. They sometimes use green linen. There are three grades: Canvas, linen and paper. Each are made from exactly what they are labeled as. Paper will show shinier, more vivid color, even more so than G-10, but Busse only bought it in black and not even that anymore. Linen is in the middle.
2. Mineral oil brings out the colors and patterns in Micarta but is does make them feel pretty nasty. Your skin will eventually have that effect naturally with use, and they won't feel nasty.
3. Not in my experience. They are both extremely durable, and I've seen canvas Micarta chip, but never G-10, but I'm not saying it doesn't. Both will last forever. Canvas Micarta feels softer and nicer in use, however.
4. You can easily sand both, but G-10 dust is very dangerous to inhale, and a mask or respirator should be worn and it should be done outside. Micarta is much less hazardous.
