Forged this up yesterday from 4140. I was doing some R&D trying to figure out a way to make the eye hole easier, after all these things I tried the foolproof and quickest way was just to do it by hand  . But I did come away with a new technique to drift the hole so it is angled like the traditional ones without dealing with starting with an angled slot. This one came out at about 2.5 pounds. I am used to 1045 for hammers, this 4140 is very different but good. Hopefully I can get the HT down with this steel just as easy as with 1045.

That looks really good Sam!

No where as impressive as that mind blowing coffee table, but I might be able to get one of these some day :)

thanks Dan! if i were to sell a table like that, to my friends it wouldn't go for an art gallery price, neither do my hammers :D

thanks Jason!

I wouldn't be so sure Sam. You've been turning out some pretty cool stuff the past year or so

And the hammer looks fantastic. I've wanted to try a Japanese style hammer for quite a while now.
Have you ever had the opportunity to use a hammer similar to what you just made ?

Make sure you post a pic of the hammer after you get the handle installed.

Again, nice work :)

I'd like to get some peices in a gallery, would be some welcome income!

Dave, thanks, I made myself an offset hammer but it is 90 degree, not an angled handle like this one, so it will be interesting to try it.

Punch through straight then drift through at an angle. Or you can use an angled plate to punch over keeping your punch straight up and down, or you can taper your head, then punch with the punch straight up and down.
