New Handle Material

I thought I would share a recent find with you gents. I decided to try some new handle material called “fauxcarta”. You know that funky smell that g10 and Micarta (yes, you can smell it even through a mask) emit when worked, well this stuff doesn’t have it. The texture is a bit different and it polishes out nicely too. The fella I bought it from, Jeff Petzke (Jephco 254-423-4148) said it was non-toxic, which is a huge relief seeing that everything else we mess with IS. I have been told that exposure to phenolics will make all your kids be born naked and bald headed. Just a warning. Curtis

They make filters that will filter out the fumes from grinding micarta. When using my system with the appropriate filters I do not smell anything.

A big issue with grinding anything is the particulates. However, if there is another material that is less toxic with similar properties, it should spark interest. Just continue to wear the mask.

Photo link not working.

The bad smell with phenolics, like Micarta, is the formaldehyde. I isn't good to breathe. Use organic gas filters rated for formaldehyde. Some products are made with acrylics, and they smell less, but are much softer.

Good looking knife. I like the pattern on the blade. Care to share your methods?

How much does the material cost?

VERY INTRESTED IN ANY NEW PRODUCT. Please please guys get a mask on. we have lost to many good guys in the community world wide to not protect ourselves and our familys love.
Lets see more about this product

Thanks for the tips on the filters. I use particulate filters (p100) and will be adding the gas filters. I contacted Jeff at Jephco to get more info on the handle material. As soon as I hear something back I will add another post. Thanks gents!

I think it's interesting that talk of a new material went to filtering the toxins found in G10 and Micarta. Toxins can stay in the air for hours which means after we sand Micarta and G10 we should keep our masks on for hours after we finish. We all do that; right? I don't know about the rest of you but I want to hear more about new products, safer ones and try some of it. I've used some of their other products and never been sorry.
