I’m replacing the handle on one of my kitchen knives, it’s got a narrow, full-tang, slab handle. I’d like to put a larger piece of micarta on it, but to maintain it’s current center line, it'll have to be slotted from the top. Basically a partial hidden tang, exposed from the top. The question is: How do I cut this channel in the micarta? I would think it would need to be a close fit, it’s 3/32 stock. Got any ideas?

txs,

Hello. Rather then trying to to cut a top slot, I suggest you simplify it and just use two pieces of micarta and place a spacer of 3/32nd brass below the blade.

You could also mill out a recess in one slab 3/32" deep, glue it up, and then grind 3/32" off of the outside of the other side.

Maybe you can try using a cicular table saw. If you can find a blade the proper thickness.
Set up the fence so that the cut is centered and set at the desired depth.
I know a maker that does this with both wood and stag handles.

Tj, if you have access to a band saw, the blade is probably close to the thickness of the knife's tang. Just be real carefull holding the micarta on it's end!!If you have a c-clamp or something similar, clamp it to the bottom of the micarta for stability.Just lay the clamp on a flat surface and then set the micarta on it's end and in the jaws of the clamp. That way the clamp will lay flat on the band saw table. Take care! Michael
