Ok so I just got in a bunch of handles. Overall they look pretty good. Got some 36" DB and SB, and some boy scout handles.

So I am basically bored with sanding and staining and getting color to the handles this way or the other. I am going to look at some other products for trying to get color to the almost hurtfull white/yellow/pale handles. Common products used for me in the past is linseed, wood stain, blowtorch, wd40, etc. I want to try somethng new.

All handles will be sanded down to remove any kind of coating on the handle.

First I have been collecting old motor oil for the last couple years. I am going to try that. Am looking at whether to wipe it on, or just let the handle sit in it for a period of time. I have put motor oil on old handles, but never brand new ones. I am thinking the older/dirtier the oil the better.

Next I am thinking about coffee. Dont know why I thought of coffee, but as well all know it will stain just about anything, including your teeth. So it is cheap and plentiful so I am going to try it. Why not.

I have heard guys on here speak of dye for leather. I dont know anything about that, or really even where to get it. So I am going to see if I can pick some up locally, and see what I can figure out with it.

Any other suggestions for something to try would be appreciated. As you can tell I have a bad case of cabin fever. The weather has been terrible and our spring is backed up by a few weeks now. So I need something to do. So give me some ideas to try. I will post pictures of the handles pre stain and post stain so you all can see what a mess I have made.

Thanks.

Thanks.

If you have a Tandy store nearby they sell Fiebings leather dye. It works better than any stain I have ever found. A coat or three of linseed over the dye seals it well.
Best regards

Robin

These are all dyed with Fiebings.

I like reusing materials, but I personally wouldn't want to do much handling of used motor oil.
YMMV.
From the motor oil companies: "Used motor oil is a possible skin cancer hazard based on animal data."

I used some medium brown Fiebing's after seeing one of Pipeman's hafts in a picture. I did to trail hawks and a pipe hawk and I'm very happy with them. It seems a more natural looking finish, rustic maybe, then say a Minwax stain. I'll try and snap some shots and post them.
