New here and need EDC recommendation.

Most of us don't care for combo edges. Not enough of either type to really work with. Most of us prefer plain edges.

You can sharpen serrations with a Spyderco Sharpmaker. (and the plain edge as well.)

Griptilian as a first/all purpose knife.

It doesn't have to be your last, or the be-all-end-all knife, but out of the other knives I have I keep coming back to it as an EDC.

I happen to rate the 154cm it comes with as an good to mid-range steel. However, I've been kitchen steeling it after every fairly lengthy cutting session, and it's still wicked sharp. I have yet to actually sharpen the factory edge, and it's been while since I bought mine.

Dude I live in Marin, just north of S.F. Dont worry about any knife laws, even autos are cool with most cops as long as you're not playing "stab & slash" with the general public.

One of my everyday carrys is a SOG Trident (tigerstripe finish) and its never let me down. Their assisted opening technology is top-notch too. I particularly like the grip and it even has a groove for cutting cord and stuff without having to open the blade (admitedly it would have to be small cord).

However, it sounds like you might be a bit worried about appearance and this knife definetly doesn't have the friendliest looking blade. But for price (you can find them for under $70!) and function it was a good choice for me.

I included some pics:

Of the ones you listed, the Benchmade is a really great knife for the price, and they can be had for under 70 bucks. I have an (auto) BM with 154CM thats pretty easy to sharpen, even with a whetstone, and it holds and edge well under most cutting conditions. People do like Spyderco, and while I dont own any, they didn't get a good reputation for not holding up.

I have a SOG trident, great knife, but it's too intimidating for EDC. I also have a SOG Pentagon II, a Spyderco Endura and I recently bought a Benchmade 710. I'd have to say the 710 is the best of the bunch, mainly due to the axis-lock. IMHO Benchmade is a little better than the rest. The Pardue 530 would be a great choice, it's next knife on my gotta get list. The 530 is super-slim but it's still big enough to take care of business.

You might want to check out the kershaw line, very high quality for the dollar, some are assisted-opening & others aren't but have flippers for fast one-handed opening. Some of the ones that are less sheeple-alarming: the Junkyard Dog, either 1 or 2, is under $50 but great quality. The Lahar is a couple bucks more but supposed to be outstanding. Tons of people love the bumps (Sg2 model is best steel, probably more expensive). The Avalanche is an older model that is excellent too.

Another option is the CRKT M4, designed by Kit Carson, with assisted opening. It's a great design & has the auto-lawks locking system which is very secure.

I'm not knocking the BM griptillian, it's a great knife, but there are a bunch of great options out there!

Oh my, I thought this thread died already. Hey Jonny, thanks a bunch for those pics. Also thanks for the info on the autos, I wasn't very sure. To me, if it looks a bit intimidating then I like it. I just don't want any funky looking blade that has crazy hooks and holes that I don't need. Yeah I heard a lot of good things about the BM 710 so I'm putting that into consideration. Also fishface, thanks for those suggestions I'll look into them as well. Speaking of the Trident, does that little groove to cut fishing line and things like that work pretty good? Thanks everyone for these responses.

Edit: Fishface, thanks again for sending those selections out to me. Out of all of them I think I like the Avalanche look the most. Dang, so many to choose from!

Will do. Also, I didn't want to make another topic but does anyone have any idea on what kind of knife this is:

K3Fallout, about the groove on the Trident, it works okay but like i said the groove isn't very big so the rope or cord you want to cut has to be pretty slim in order to fit in there. Fishing line and string and stuff like that is no problem at all.
I've barely used the groove to be honest. Besides, its much funner to snap that blade open (and believe me, it SNAPS open) to cut things anyway.

Good luck on your choice.

Bleh, looks like the picture isn't working. Thanks for that info Jonny. Snapping it seems a lot of fun, heh. So far I think my choices by more wanting is the 530, grip, and then the trident.
