New Here. Fixed blade for <$100?

I'm really wanting an RC-5 still but I don't know if it's worth it since I don't really camp/hike often so I don't know if a "serious" knife is absolutely necessary.

All of the knives you're looking at are "serious" in one way or another.

The RC-5 is a great choice. A very useful blade length for many tasks,
super build quality, and pretty easily saleable if you change your mind.

The Fallkniven S1 is similarly sized, similarly priced, and also a great blade.

If I had to choose between those two I'd personally pick the Fallkniven, but as for
quality and overall usefulness it's pretty much a coin toss.

The Fallkniven S1 is one of my favorite fixed blades. It doesn't look like much in pictures, but it's a heck of a thick piece of laminated VG-10 stainless that can take an awesome beating and still function well.

The RC-5 sheath offers more carry options, however.

As for the info from the Boker website on place of manufacture, I'm sorry to say it's inaccurate.
I have held some models of the Boker Plus Chad Los Banos ("CLB") knives in my hand and have seen the "China" label on them.
(But some models of the CLB knives are, in fact, made in Taiwan.)

I think I'm going to continue looking into the Ka-bar selection and a couple of others who's pricing is around $40-80 or so. I'd love one of these other $100+ knives but I don't need one right now. But one will surely end up in my stash sooner or later :D

?

I was talking about quality...and to some extent warranty. Not sure about Barkies, but aside from taking a hammer to a Rat- they will replace it for life.

Not sure if the Moras don't do it visually, the 2000 is a great knife at a fantastic price. The RC-5 is an absolute beast and the RC-4 would see you through about anything at a bunch less weight.

Good luck with your shopping and be sure to post pics on your buy.

Stick with ka bar, dont go ontario. Ka Bar made the original fighting/utility knife and they have a lot better heat treat than ontario. Ka bar doesnt screw over designers that make designs for them like ontario does either.

Also, Becker is the designer, Ka Bar is the maker. Hope that answers your question about Becker/Ka Bar

I've narrowed it down to about 5 or so knives that are around $40-80 that seem to be pretty well liked for their price.

Buck 119
Buck Nighthawk
Gerber LMF II (Seems like a lot of people like this one - too bad it's serrated. Oh well)
Becker BK7 (Was looking into the BK2 but I read that it weighs a lot for it's size)
USMC Ka-bar

I also hear Ka-bar makes a USAF version which is supposedly a smaller version of the USMC combat/utility knife. I'm thinking of getting one of these knives since they'll probably fit my "needs" most without breaking the bank. I'll probably get a RC-5 later down the road since I really like that piece. But not right now :D

I narrowed it down even more. I'm torn between the Becker BK2 and the BK7 so I told my girlfriend about them and I'm going to let her decide :D. I wonder if I should get a Micarta handle for the Becker's since it seems like the stock handle isn't very grippy.

Huge fan of the Moras. Under $20 buys you a 5 in. high carbon steel, full tang, comfortable, and easy to maintain blade, and, as previously mentioned, you can afford to use it hard, and it won't break the bank replacing it. Don't sell these babies short. Not much they can't do that the more $$ knives can. Just practice! My $.02

The stock handle is grippy enough, but micarta is definitely better. Go Back and tell her you want the BK7. I have both knives, and I think the BK7 is an overall better blade. Plus the BK7 does come with the little BK13 knife that also fits in the sheath.

+1 on the Becker BK7.

Below are a few of your mentioned choices. The RAT RC-5 is out of your price range, but clearly the best choice for many applications. I would rate the Nighthawk and KaBar about even - but prefer the KaBar, as that was my camping knife for years. The LMFII was a Father's Day gift from my oldest son in '08 - not favored here due to the serrations.

A great choice - fantastic value - is as close as your local WallyWorld - the Buck 119 (~$34 there!). Here it is with a BRK&T Boone, definitely over $100, and a Marbles Plainsman, obtainable via evil-bay ~$100. To be honest, the 119 is a hard act to follow!

All knives shown were made in the USA, although their sheaths might be imports.

Stainz

I told her I was leaning on the BK7 so hopefully that's big enough of a hint to get one! Lucky for me, all of the knives I narrowed it down to are relatively inexpensive so whichever one she doesn't buy, I can buy the other 4 :D
