I have always loved knives and now that I'm retired I have decided to start collecting. I guess I kinda am already just counted and I have 63. 1 fixed blade the rest are folders of different brands. My favorite is a 110 Buck do any of you have suggestions on other brands similar to the 110 to start with. I am particularly interested in some handmade. Also would appreciate any input on any good books on collecting. Thanks.

Welcome. Get a copy of Bernard Levine's Guide to Knives and Their Values, 4th Ed or earlier (not the 5th Ed or later!)

WELCOME!

Be sure to explore the subforums. Lots of diverse interests and expertise abound.

And be sure to visit Bernard's subforum as well.

Enjoy your stay.

Welcome. Bernard Levine also has a subforum here. You might want to subscribe to that one and visit it often. The Buck Collector's Club has a web site. Also, back in the day when Buck was king of the roost, Schrade, Browning, Uncle Henry, Case, Puma (IIRC), and a few other brands had 110 look-alike's. Might be worth trying to collect some of them. A. G. Russell has them come up sometimes on his cuttingedge.com web site.

Welcome!

If you like the 110 - you can collect each of the many variations of that knife, or you could look for the custom versions (you can get a custom 110 on the Buck web site).

There is a Buck collectors club that would get you an inside track on special edition 110s and other knives.

Then there is the 111 Classic - search google for that one and see if that floats your boat.

Other things to collect are traditional slip joint knives - there is a very well followed Traditional forum here at BF that is entirely dedicated to the traditional knife.

Alternatively, you could check out some of the great new knives being made by the modern manufacturers; one of my favorites is Zero Tolerance which is the tactical leg of Kershaw.

Spyderco makes a great knife and they have a large following here.

You could also look into the Chris Reeve knives - the Sebenza is a very popular albeit higher-priced knife that many people enjoy owning and using.

And I guess I have to add - if you like 110s, have you checked out the 112? That is one of my favorites.

best

I've seen some bangin' work from T.A. Davison over in the custom knife for sale subforum, great lookin' slipjoints.

Thanks everyone for all the info after spending all afternoon on the internet I realize I have a lot to learn.

Welcome, friend. Good to have you aboard.

If you like quality, old-school production, then definitely take a look at KnivesShipFree.com (Derrick, the owner, is an active member-dealer here on the Forum). Derrick has Great Eastern Cutlery (and occasionally Queen Cutlery) make his line of Northwoods Knives. They are some of the best traditional folders I have had the pleasure to own and use.

Here are a few examples (just because we love pics here!):

I just love 'em - especially the wharnies, but they have several models in several blade styles and scale configurations t choose from. I believe I am allowed to post his website link here because he's a BF member - here it is if you're interested:
