New HI D-Handle Khukuri

I should have taken a pic of the knife in my hand and I think those concerns would not have been raised. There is far less room between knuckles and guard when I am holding it, and others here have larger hands than me. Still could have been a bit tighter in, but my wife has very small hands...

Ohhhhhh, that was your wife holding it? I thought that was your pretty pink sweatshirt. ;) :D

Seriously, the more I look at it, the more I like it!

Steve

I just took another look and noticed the nice engraving on the brass.
This is not a blade for smashing up wood. It is much too nice for that.

Hey, I happen to like pink, but I'm just as normal as the next guy! I put my panties on one leg at a time like everyone else...:D ;)

Great review and great pics to go with a really neat looking k-nife!!!!
Perhaps in a day or two I can finish up the review with pics of the original Ultimate Fighter which is a whole lot plainer.
And without the D Guard the balance should also be quite a bit different.
The weather is supposed to be nice the next few days and I'm finally over the crud that Barbie and I had so all systems should be go if nothing else happens. :o

Outstanding!

Can you take a pic of the front of the guard (where it meets the blade)?

Thanks for the write up and the pics. Fine looking blade. I've never cared for the D handle in general, but that one looks great.

Looks great Norm! You'll have to bring this one over to the Baja Cantina when you can meet up. I wonder how this one would look with the Cherokee Rose blade?

I'll be there this year for sure Sweet. Just have to walk out of here for the night and not let them get me to stay night after night.

You know, I didn't put those two together but that would be a great combination with that blade!

Sure Dan, I will try and do it tonight. Won't have natural light but it should be plain enough. As with Steve's Patang there are some gaps there on each side of the blade but not bad at all.

Thanks,

Norm

Three things:

1-Looks great!! I want one!!-when I'm not knee deep in guns :D

2-That prong, protusion on the back would have to go...your wrist will thank you.

3-I am the only one who thinks this handel might look great on a sword? :D

just wondering if it has carving....like the patang, etc.

No, the only engraving is on the bolsters on each side of the wood handle. All the metal work is plain.

I would be really interested in hearing from whoever bought the 18" today how it balances and feels in the hand. I _always_ seem to like longer bladed knives, but this 16" just floats because of the handle/blade balance.

Come to think of it Dan, the balance is almost exactly like that of the subhilt 15" CAK you did for me. Maybe a little less handle heavy.

I have not decided but may take off that rear 90 degree turn that Krull mentioned. I think I could smooth it out pretty nicely and it would be hard to tell it had been there. In a way I don't want to do it as this is the very first and from Yangdu and I should respect that, but it would stop any crowding of the wrist. I'll see how it goes.

Thanks,

Norm

Before you take it off, try grinding or filing a radius in that sharp corner and see if that helps. Looks like you could take some metal off without weakening it. Might be enough.

Steve

PS I know what you mean about the respect part. I started to " woodchuck" the handle of the Patang, but decided to leave it just as Bura made it.

My very first "real" sword was a Del Tin Viking job:try taking a good swing with the khuk in a safe place (lawn;no bystanders or pets)...when it bangs into your wrist joint and feels like it broke it you'll see it's just useless! (viking swords can h-u-r-t!! )

I've learned to let it swing past my wrist, but I've moved on to more agreeable swords :D and hung it up.

Dan, it only took me a week! Sorry 'bout that. Here's a couple of the front of the guard where it meets the blade and passes thru. These is a small gap there and you can see some laha. I was thinking about just trying to clean it out to make it more even and using a bit of JB in there. Or maybe not. Not really that noticeable.

I think Steve said he had the same deal on his Patang...

Thanks,

Norm

I showed these pics to my wife and we are both cracking up. Really, my hands don't look THAT huge, but with the camera 3" away that's what you get...:)

I will try that Steve! Great idea, thank you.

I might have missed the answer to this already....but is it solid brass? or hollow?

The guard? No, the whole thing is one solid piece of brass. It is very strong, locked front and rear. That's why I am not too worried about this first one having a more pronounced drop to the guard at the rear. Somone mentioned a concern about it possibly flexing, but I don't see that. I think you could grip this and use it as a major brass knuckle with little concern.
