Hey Cakes......the 24 looks great.......nothing wrong with it.......it looks like both the blade and the lockside have been bead blasted.........
Very cool look.
Eventually, with use and wear......the blade will start looking more WF........congrats on a fantastic find......

So this isn't how it came from Hinderer? Will this still be under warrenty you think?

Plenty of knives come from the Hinderer Ranch with a bead blasted finish. No reason to think yours isn't one of them. Congrats on your score!

No.......you misunderstood......

I meant that the blade and lockside have been beadblasted by Hinderer.........everything looks original and perfect.........based on the pics.......you have nothing to be concerned about.......

What you have scored is a fairly rare production XM.........most likely a 24 made for a Knife Show.........the Ranch creates some cool and different Production XM variations for shows......on some occasions they have beadblasted the blade.........it's a cool look and an awesome finish........and if you use the XM.......it will start looking even cooler when wear patterns develop........

Definitely legit, factory bead blasted finish with next to no use it appears (as the others have already pointed out). Congrats on the new knife.

Here they are! Seller says he bought it second hand 4 years ago and put it in his safe. He says he thinks its first generation is there any way to tell? Also, this thing isn't super rare is it? If you need any other pics to tell let me know. Thanks for the help guys Im happy to have a few Hinderers again!

Since it is a production Spanto, my guess would be that it is a Gen 2........I am not sure there were any Gen 1 Production Spantos made......but I could be mistaken......
It is a rarer production blade as most of the production 24 blades would be stonewashed, not beadblasted........beadblasted locksides are more common.
There are also production 24's that were done in WF as well..........so the rarity is in respect to the fact that it is different than the norm and there probably aren't a ton of full beadblast 24's floating around.
If I am mistaken about any of this, I hope a Mod will correct me........

^^Me thinks you accidentally posted that "bead blast is more common" instead of SW.

The Shows are where lines are pleasantly blurred and cool creations and finishes come out to play. Nice 24 and the Skinner's sweet too.

The Gen 1 XM-24s were all titanium, no G-10. There are only ten of them. You might want to check out the history thread...

I am fairly confident no one ever bought a Gen 1 XM-24 without knowing they were buying a Gen 1 XM-24.

As Mike mentions, Rich's sticky is good reading.... Bottom line, they just arrived. Play with your Knives, you can research lineage, history etc. later.
For now just enjoy the new arrivals.

N2K.......what I meant to say was that Beadblasted locksides are more common than bead blasted blades.........you don't see the blades blasted too often but I have come across quite a few blasted locksides in my "travels"........

So.....Mike.....the 10 Gen 1 24's......are they also considered the prototypes......or are the prototypes something else entirely.......I wasn't actually sure about that part....

I could be mis-remembering ( pre- Alzheimer's maybe ) but I think only the first assembled knife of the batch of ten was marked prototype.

Sweet 24 (nice Skinner too).

Question regarding The Ranch and "blasting"... do they only do bead blast or do they also do sand blast?

I used to have an older Gen4 (sterile bladed) XM-18 Spanto that was blasted and I always assumed it was sand blasted... but maybe it was bead blasted? And I currently have a blasted Skinner en route (again, assumed it's sand blasted, but maybe it's bead). Would appreciate knowing. Thx! :)
