I am in the process of building a new forging shop and would like to hear suggessions. I am adding a steel building w/ concrete floor to my previous shop building and have probably covered all the bases in the construction design but there are almost always things that one overlooks and now while it is soon to be under construction is the time to make changes or additions.

Any thoughts as to essentials that you would have wanted to include in the construction of yours if you had it to do over again.

Thanks in advance.

well if i was doing it , i would make sure that if i was going to have something like a hammer or any heavy tools , that i had enough concrete under it so it does not brake up
show some pix when your done.

I wish had seperate rooms for grinding, forging, machining, and a clean room. I went to Josh smith's 1st hammer-in and he had all of these. It was all nicely layed out.

Build a collar out of two pieces of HD angle and sink it in the concrete for a post vise if you have one. I did this outside the shop and use it mainly for grinding billets. But if it was inside close to the forge it could be used for twisting and dozen other operations.

I do have a post vise. I had thought of attaching a pipe socket to the concrete for the post to set in but would like to hear your ideas.

The new shop addition is going to be solely for the hot work. It will be connected to my current shop which I will use for grinding, machining, etc.

:) I have never had anything close to a clean room. Not sure if I would know how to work in "clean".

forget the concrete, my hot shop has a dirt floor........on purpose.
Man was meant to walk on dirt, the concrete will hurt your feet, knees and back.
Just my opinion,
