Hey guys and gals..I have been looking into a HT oven to start out with and thought about the new artisan from evenheat..My question is with the box being 8x8 am I to assume that I can get up to a 10 and a half inch blade in there? Is there anything wrong with putting blades in diagonally or should you stick to knife lengths that will fit in square? Thanks everyone!!

I would suggest buying one size bigger than you need, rather than 1 size smaller. HT equipment is not the place to scrimp. Its expensive, and having to replace it in a year is just throwing money away. Go with an 18" model.

I purchased the 18" evenheat, I agree with Willie. If you put the blades in diagonally they may have parts of the blade getting hotter if they get too close to the coils.

Agreed! If you only ever want to make folders, it might be ok. I bought a 24, in retrospect would have been ok with an 18.5.

Also, people seem to think the 240 heats up faster, which seems right since it has more watts of heating element. I have a 240 myself, and wouldn't want it to go any slower.

Wise words, I bought my 13.5" Evenheat several years ago and it does 99% of the knives I make. It will handle 12" OAL blades just fine. Don't scrimp on your kiln.
I make mostly folders, with occasional fixed blade hunter skinner type knives and found the 13.5 is all I need.

If you are handy, look in the stickies for plans. Between Auberins and Ebay, I got all the parts I need to make a 20" long kiln for under $400.00. I am using a metal tool box for the cabinet, have a housing for all the PID equipment from auberins, and am using a single 240v kanthal. I have a bunch of sheet metal that I could use to custom make a cabinet, but I saw the toolbox on sale at Canadian tire and thought is was the perfect size. I will add a second Kanthal once I test it out if I am a little short on heat. For carbon steels I think I will be OK.

Save your money until you can buy more oven than you think you will ever need. Then save a little more and buy the next size up.

Buy Once Cry Once
I got a 27" cause I never want to have to buy a bigger one and cost difference is not really that much when you look at it.

Thanks for the input everyone!! I did take a look at that knife dogs oven...Its definitely in my range, does anyone have any experience with one?
