I would love to see a big folder from Spyderco; I've stated this idea a couple of times on this forum now and I'm trying to bring something to light. I think a large, lightweight folding knife from Golden would be the perfect addition to many of the backwoods survival kits and to tuck in the car or in the pack for when your primary knife isn't big enough or breaks. Here's the type of design I would like to see:
I would like an H1 blade; from my experience, it holds a good edge and it won't rust. It's a pretty much bulletproof steel to make a knife out of. If H1 isn't possible, I like VG10 too because it's easier to sharpen than S-30 or -60V and resists rust much better. Those two attributes would be worth the sacrifice in edge retention.
G10 or FRN handles would be most favorable for a knife like this; they're lightweight and many features can be added to them. E.g.: they could come in colors for easy location (like hunter's orange, yellow, etc.), lanyard holes can be drilled, and multiple carry configurations can be added.
A lockback would be the best lock. It's a very strong and proven design. A compression or liner would also work well; I would like to see open construction for easy maintenance and cleaning.
The knife should have a clip, maybe even come with spare. Hey, put it in a nylon or similar pouch, maybe something waterproof, with a firesteel and a small file sharpener and sell it as a kit--that would be nice.
I would make the blade anywhere for 4.75 to 6 inches long; I prefer anything over 5". It would not be legal, of course, in some jurisdictions, but in the backcountry or rural areas when you need a real user the park ranger would not arrest you for such a piece of kit. A drop-point or clip point blade, I think, would offer the most utility. I would also be interested to see a configuration like that of the Centofante 4. Drilled or skeletonized titanium or stainless steel liners (keep it affordable) would add to the strength and rigidity, so they'd be a great addition. I've been thinking about this for a while and I would like to see this idea come to fruition. Help me get this thing off the ground. Like the Superhawk, I think it would be cool to name this thing SuperSalt with an H1 blade, liners, an FRN handle, and a titanium clip.
