Santa was kind to me this year. My father got me a brand new iMac computer from the Apple store in Knoxville. I finally got it up and running and am slowly learning the ropes. I really see how these computers are top-notch. I love the set-up and, in time, I am sure that i will utilize many of the assets that the Macs come with.

Excellent gift, I hope you really enjoy using it. I expect that you will.
The only computers I've ever earned have been Mac, and I love them.
I am thinking about getting a PC laptop to play online Poker, (yes I can play poker on a Mac, but there are more rooms that are PC friendly).

You're going to find that the Apple Store experts are hard to stump with any technical questions. You're probably not going to have many problems. Macs are great machines.

I am just amazed at how fluid this machine works. It never freezes or slows, I can run different things at once, and the computer still runs great. I love everything from the fact that the entire computer is the width of about 3-4 cd cases, the monitor is crystal clear, the keyboard is cool, and the mouse is even nifty.

I simply cant say one thing bad about these computers. I hear that viruses are almost none out there for Macs because most of the people who make virsuses target PCs. Also, I would like for others to post links about anything that you guys might think would be helpful for me regarding my mac. I need all the help I can get!!! ;)

Once you go Mac, you never go back.
I have a dozen Macs in an outbuilding, plus a few more upstairs. When I built a new computer this year, I went with PC. Macs are great, but there are an equal number of reasons to choose a PC instead.

You've perfectly described BeOS, a 1991 operating system that ran sleek and smooth on a Pentium II or III. :D The new PCs with dual-core (and quad-core) processors also have the ability to run many different applications simultaneously.

Glad you like your new machine! I'd love to get a modern high-end Mac, but with the new PC it's out of the question for now. I've read recently that Apple is now using Intel processors, hopefully the first step towards being able to dual-boot Windows and Mac.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

Bob, my iMac is a intel duo core. I have 4 computers and recently, prior to getting this Mac, bought a do centrino toshiba satellite laptop. That computer is great as well. But after using this mac for the past 24 hours, I dont see myself using the laptop too much wen at home, anytime soon ;)

There are absolutely many as many reasons to choose a PC as to choose a Mac.

That being said, I've been using a mac since Power Mac desktops. I ran my 5300cs for years, then a G3 Powerbook, now I'm on a Powerbook G4... Which I bought a mere three months before they upgraded the G4 line, then switched to the Macbook Pro.

What really sold me on Apple computers was their customer service. I dropped my 5300cs on cement, the display cracked and bled LCD fluid everywhere. Within four days of calling Apple, I had a box sent to my house, packed the computer up and had it shipped, and had it returned with a brand new screen installed.

Bob W, Windows can now be run on any Mac with an Intel chip, no additional software or hardware required. You can even set them up on seperate user accounts. It's been possible to boot both OS' at once, but a little clumsy unless you have a LOT of RAM.

Reconseed, start with the Software Update and Mac OS Software menu items in the Apple Menu. Apple's updates are great, and the Mac OS Software link contains more freeware and shareware then you'll ever need, in addition to drivers, widgets, and more.

Versiontracker.com is also an excellent software resource.

ender, thank you sir. I will refer to that website for additional information. I like my iMac and you are right, you can run Windows because whenever I got mine at the apple store, the salesman told me that to.. Also, i have heard phenomenal things about Mac computers, from durability to functionality. I am on my toshiba satellite now... only because i am watching another thing santa brought me in my stocking, "TALLADEGA NIGHTS," on my Mac.:);)

What I would really need is for Mac to be installable on my new PC. It's a homemade jobber (to save $$) and I think that MacOS can still only be installed on Apple hardware.

I just checked prices at the Apple website minutes ago. Their desktop price came out to $3800, almost identical price as similarly configured Dell, but about $1800 more than I spent to build my own.

In the past it's also been more difficult and expensive to upgrade Apple computers (propietary motherboards, graphics, RAM, etc.). Hopefully the new direction Apple is taking will address that as well.

Best Wishes, and have fun with your new toy!

Bob, I love my new toy!!! :) And I agree, it would be nice to have Mac OS available on a PC. However, I think that if that happened, Windows would become defunct. Reason I say that is, after using this machine for the past few days, it really is user friendly and runs smoother, IMO. With this new dual intel processor its cool because I can run both OS's on the same machine. Gah, I really am starting to be thankful for Steve Jobs and the Apple/Mac crew!

Is Mac software availability where you live, or do you have to special-order? Are most common titles available for Mac? Have you found that Mac software versions cost more?

Those were some gripes of mine when I used Apple computers. I haven't looked at Mac stuff in a long time, and have no idea if it's still true.

We have an Apple store here in Knoxville, Tennessee at the West Town Mall. They have EVERYTHING. Anything you need, you can get at an Apple store.

I've never been interested in a computer of any kind that I cannot build and customize myself. I want to pick the motherboard, the CPU, the heatsink, the case, etc. With just about any manufactured computer (Apple or PC) this is impossible. You may get some choice in the matter, but you never get 100% freedom. And I hate having to bother with a limited warranty. These days you can't even open the case without voiding the warranty.

But I'm glad you like your Mac :) It's always great to broaden your horizons and learn new things. It's been torture for me not to open up my new PC laptop and upgrade the cooling...because that would void the warranty :ugh:

Why on earth build your own, buy a 2 year old mac desktop and it will still out perform any windows machine in the real world.

As far as buying software, I only have bought two other programs for my Macs, one a building/rendering package, and the other an estimating package for my work as a contractor. Everything else from spreadsheets to wp is done in appleworks.
