Hey there everyone, I have been a long time lurker in this sub-forum, and I am proud to say that I finally feel worthy enough to post.
I recently aquired a GW from fitzOdaggers, and it was my first fixed blade. I have been a folder kind of guy for a while now, and was looking for a tough blade that I could use for everything, especially when the weather starts clearing here and I can get out into the wilderness.
After hearing legends of the Busse blades, I figure that I had to try one out. I have always had a belief that if you like something (knives, guns, liquor, anything worth spending cash on
) start with the best, and if it cant make you love it, its not worth loving....... But thats just me.
Anyways, I immediately used my GW once I received it to break some pallets down that the landscapers left in my yard after last years sod. This little knife is unbelievably tough! I batoned through a nail accidentally and other than minor edge rolling there was no damage.
I wasnt a huge fan of the sage coating on the blade, it actually seemed to come off rather easily when I was putting it throught the wood, so I stripped it once I was done. I used pure acetone and soaked the knife in it, after about 15 minutes, the coating was almost gummy in texture and light sanding with a 320 grit sanding sponge took that coating right off. Does anyone have any tips on stripping the coating that I should know?
Anyways, I have had the GW for about 2 weeks now, and I felt it was lonely, so I placed my order today for a Skinny ASH-1 at the company store. Now the waiting begins........ I was toying between the NMSFNO and the ASH, and I felt that the ASH would be a suitable size for 95% of all my camping/hunting needs. I use many of my knives in the kitchen (just to piss off my Henckels set [I use those at work all day long anyways]), and I thought that the thinner stock will be more beneficial to food prep, while still being Busse tough for when I need it.
I cant wait for the ASH to arrive, then I'll post some pictures of the GW and ASH when it gets here, and I know how you guys like pictures. I look forward to spending some time here in this place, getting to know this tight-knit group of guys (and gals).
On a side note, all you So. Oregon/No. California knife guys, I am planning some Crater Lake and Mt. McLoughlin hikes this summer, let me know if you all are interested, or if you have some better suggestions let me know!
