No really... I believe they coat the blades with WD-40 before they ship out of the shop.

I think the G-10 might also have something to do with the smell... Maybe I'm just nuts, but every G-10 or Micarta handled knife I've had had a slight but notable smell, probably from finishing the scale material. :D
