I have seen pics of this primitive knife before and loved it. This past April at the OKCA show in Eugene OR, I found one on a dealer's table and snagged it. Love the design but had a few things I wished were different so I made my own version :) Not sure if the original is from Malaysia or Phillipines but my bet is it's close to that region of the world. A file test of the blade shows it has a pretty good temper. Also has some nice edge geometry too. For my own version, I added the double lanyard holes,used 1/4in steel, black G10 scales, and a little larger handle size. Suits me just about perfect :D Here's a pic of the two together.
 
bill that kicks @ss very simple yet it looks very effective, how long is the blade and the whole package man?
 
DOHH!!! Forgot the specs! It is 16 5/8 overall with a 10 5/8 blade(tip to handle) It's a biggun but with a little grinding magic, it doesn't feel TOO heavy :)

I will guess the Philippines. The reason I say that is I have one that looks very similar if not exact. (I don't have it here at work.) The handle of mine are water buffalo horns. I'm planning on taking pictures of mine this weekend. I will get a close-up of the handles so you can compare.

Not so sure on my end but it kinda looks more like a Barong (filipino) than a parang.
havent seen many barongs but the sample i have seen yeah the slight clip point is there.
